I am the faster traffic in the left lane, traveling at the same speed in the left lane with the other vehicles... passing the traffic in the right lane. He's an aggressive driver by tailgaiting. I can't go any faster than the traffic in front of me. I can't squeeze in to a spot in the right lane at my rate of speed, and the lane congestion. So to the tailgaiter... BACK OFF!

The last time I was tailgated, I was already doing 20-ish over and I gave the guy THE LOOK with both eyes through the side view mirror. He saw that I was checking him out and backed off and STAYED back there (yes he was so close, he could see me looking at him in my side mirror). Oh and FWIW, traffic heavy, everybody was going fast and I had no where to go to get out of his way even if I wanted to.

I agree though, if you can, just move over ... then means HE will get the ticket, not you. Driving from Tennessee to Ohio, a lot of people got themselves pulled over that way ... they wanted to go faster than me and I let them ... I let them be the decoy so that the locals OR the State guys would clock them first, not me.

I used to do something similar. Not any more.

These days when trapped in heavy traffic I'll just gradually vary my speed up and down a couple of mph by gently playing with the gas pedal. Just enough variation that a standard cruise control can't be used to hold that close distance and the tailgater will have to play with his vehicle's gas pedal as well if he insists on staying that close.

I'll move over when there's safe room, but I won't instantly jump out of the way and cut into the other lane too close in front of somebody who's already there either. Anybody who expects courtesy on my part to move over had better plan on giving me safe time and room to do so.

It is illegal to camp in the passing lane in many states
It is illegal to tailgate in all states
it is illegal to exceed the speed limit at any time in all states

I use the passing lane to pass and get over as soon as I can. I drive 5 over the speed limit most of the time so I don't get run over. Many times if you are not going with the flow of traffic which averages 10 or more over you become a hazard so sometimes I will match their speeds depending on the situation. I do not tailgate!

With that being said, I truly believe we have lost our civility especially on the road. So many people drive without any regard to others it's become pretty insane out there. I also ride a motorcycle and the hazards are intensified 100 times while riding.

Yes, I get very angry when I make a legal pass and some a$$hat who is goin 15 mph or more over the speed limit tailgates me. I simply maintain my passing speed, get over as soon as it is safe and hope they get nailed by a cop and pay dearly for their stupidity. I may communicate with them in some manner as they pass me.

It's funny how we put weight on the laws that benefit us and totally ignore the ones that don't. i.e. I'll tailgate the crap out of someone who camps in the left lane (because he's breaking the law)...while doing 15 over and vice versa. If you look at the face value of that statement you can see how ridiculous it really is.

How about this, grow the hell up, remember we are all human and give each other a break. God forbid if you have to click off your cruise control and actually slow down for someone. God forbid if you actually have to go through the herculean effort to raise your left arm and activate your turn signal. God forbid you have to put down your effin cell phone and pay attention to what you are doing while you pilot a 4000 pound missile down the road.

I live in Albuquerque, a city where traffic enforcement is almost non-existent because the cops are busy with higher priority stuff most of the time. Almost every day there are major accidents on I-40 and I-25 mostly caused by impatient drivers. I try my best not to be one of them.

Remember what George Carlin said "Anyone going faster than you is a maniac and anyone going slower is an Ahole.

Drive safe everyone and good luck to you.

Why is everyone in this thread getting all hung up on the highway scenario. That's the last place I'm concerned about a tailgater, it's not like there's stop lights or even a probability of needing to slow or stop.

It's in the city, on the city streets where there are stop lights, cross traffic, parking lots etc. That's where tailgaters cause the most accidents. My philosophy there is f'em. If they're late, that's their problem, they can just deal with traffic like everyone else. If they hit me, now they're even later, and have a repair bill on their hands.

The slab is where I get tailgaited 75% of the time... side streets, not so much.

Living in Houston, you have a 50/50 chance of the other guy not having insurance.

Anyone who brake checks me I make sure to clean my windshield when I go around them.

If you don't want a speeding ticket fine...move over so I can worry about it then.

There is a 4 x 4 show on TV and they install these crazy loud horns under the rear end of the truck just for folks that like to cozy up close. It gets there attention real fast.

Truck tire debris in the lane is one situation. Passing a slower vehicle and having somebody crowd you because you aren't passing it fast enough to suit them.

Around here, people will actually accelerate up and be beside you before you're completely out of that lane. So impatient they can't even wait the couple of seconds it takes for you to fully move over.

True that ... especially in the stretch from Miami to WPB and Orlando area where I was. I now drive a "calmer" stretch of 95 but with all the bridge construction, people do get aggressive. And of course, they wait until the last minute to merge from 3 lanes to 2 lanes so it's either brakes or big orange barrels. I leave for work early enough so 5 minutes doesn't make a lot of difference.

A few years ago, in Orlando, there was a guy in a Cayenne that went into road rage and shot at a few cars... just because they were holding him up on I4. Really??? A white van maybe but a Cayenne? How stupid is that?

I had a buddy who would flip pennies out the sunroof as a last resort when he was being tailgated. The effect was dramatic!

Do I carry ... sometimes but the downside is that I have to be more courteous. Do I slam on my brakes when some one is tailgating? Probably not. But I've seen Karma kick in and I've learned to control what I can control and "let the universe" take care of what I can't. Maybe that's just the age thing kickin' in.

By the way, the guy with the 50 cal ... does that come in a low profile?
