I remember being disappointed that some things were changed like the height, the lower front fascia and the rear looked less smoothed out

however i've grown to liking the car as is and understand why changes had to be made. i just can't wait to have mine

No it wouldn't. It isn't functional because of the stuff right behind it, such as the hood latch. Doesn't hurt mileage, in fact it would hurt it more if it were open. Around most surfaces there is a thin boundary layer thats about half an inch thick. Small indentations like the mail slot get 'filled in' with air. If it were open air would try and flow through it (and encounter a lot of resistance) instead of around it.
