Try to learn about dogs personalities, and needs, and make sure that they fit your lifestyle. Don't get a husky if you live in an apartment, don't get a little lap dog if you want to take the dog hiking and camping.

Try a search in your area for trainers that offer the service of helping you choose the right breed and temperament. I've owned Rottweilers for more than 30 years and they're wonderful companions, but have a strong will, and they're not a dog for everyone. Getting help choosing the right dog for you will make both your, and the dogs life much better.
