The major problem here is that a lot of us are describing the experience as "driving a muscle car". OP says he hasn't driven one and does not know what that feeling is.

Actually, the SSC Ultimate Aero is the world's fastest car. It has a higher top speed and gets there faster for much less money.

I like punch. That's the number one thing I like.

I used to race go-karts. The track I used had these licenses that you had to qualify for based on lap times. I kept on qualifying higher and higher until I got the "super license" allowing me to use the fastest karts, but even then I could handle their power.

I'd love to test drive one, but I don't think I can. Not for a while yet at least. Not enough sitting on dealer's lots that they are willing to let me take one. Thanks for the replies. I'm getting a good sense of the Camaro vs other cars like the Corvette.

It's simple. My goal is to buy a car that I won't get bored with X number of years down the road given an understanding of my current behaviour. If I ascertain that I would get bored of the SS, then I should aim for a different car at the outset.

Articulating my goal to solicit useful information is the bigger challenge.

I do encounter many people like yourself who really don't do these kind of analysis in daily life. They appear to make decisions on gut-feel and either keep making the same mistakes over and over or they get lucky and eventually find something that makes them happy long-term (and wasting a lot of money in the process). I try to avoid gut-feel decisions by learning from past experiences and applying some analysis on future decisions. There's nothing "bizarre" about that.

My questions stem from the fact that I do not have past experiences with high performance cars. I can only base my experiences on tame sports sedans. Therefore I must ask questions of people who do have these experiences, and somehow try to articulate what I am trying to visualize.

Did somebody say articulate?

Yes, I feel I would want to speed up mine to do 0-60mpm in 3.8s likke JohnInSoCal. This matched the lambo Gallarado that my friend has. I was shaking after coming out of the car. It was an experience I can tell you.

Anything beyond that kind of accelleration is really for the tracks and thats ok, but on the streets its getting ridiculous (ok and lots of fun too!! lol)

I think even with 3.8s you will still want more. It will never end so channel it into some other mod.

We always want more power, but the Camaro is quick and fast enough stock.. You can lose your drivers license in 5 seconds with it.

To me, everything over 300 hp is wheel spin.. How much do you really need?

Sure I'd like to have a supercharger under the hood but more for looks and knowing that I have the power than actually using it...

When I say "out of control" here are some things to define what I mean:
1) when accelerating from stop, I have to accelerate properly otherwise I will lose traction (burn rubber). In other words: I need to exercise control. (With my current car, I can floor it without burning rubber :-( )

2) when coasting at 100km/h and trying to overtake someone, I can do so quickly without flooring it because when I floor it I would quickly reach a speed that's dangerous. In other words, when overtaking I have to exercise restrain (control) on the pedal otherwise I will reach a speed that's too fast.
(Right now with my current car, even if I floor it I never reach an uncomfortably high speed; in fact I need to floor it to overtake someone in a "fun" manner.)

Too fast = 180km/hr or more (my comfort threshold). I think at that speed (even temporarily), it gives me no space to react should something like a deer jumps in front of me.

In other words, if I floor it, and I exceed 180km/hr whilst trying to pass someone = out of control power. That kind of power is what I want. I want the car's capabilities to exceed my ability.

Thanks everyone!
Based on this description of how you hope to feel when you drive your next car, I believe you will be VERY pleased with an SS Camaro!

I always have to watch how hard I accelerate. I pass people with ease--from a standing stop or from any rolling speed...it has more than enough power to "scare" me on a regular basis.

I say, go for it!

Thats why we have Hennessey HPE700 that go 0-60 under 4sec I beleive.
and the SLP ZL575 in about 4.2.

So I'm wondering if after owning the SS a while (haven't got mine yet), I will get bored of the acceleration (because I've already grown accustomed to 5.9s and it's too slow now, maybe 4.6s will be the new "slow" once I get the SS?).

I guess in the grand scheme of things, one doesn't get bored of it if one knows that you can't get much better than what one has. If you already owned the fastest car out there, you aren't going to be yearning for something faster - because there isn't anything out there.

I want something more than my current car because there are much faster cars than my own for not much more money.

My point is: has anyone owned some really fast sports car like a 911 Turbo or something (3.9s), and can compare it with the SS? If the SS "feels" like the 911 Turbo, then I won't feel that I could do "better". But if current SS owners are already getting "bored" with the power and are yearning for something more - then perhaps I should consider getting the Z/28 instead.

(I am getting my Camaro in 2011 so if the Z/28 does not come out in 2011 then I won't have a problem with deciding which Camaro to get).

So for people who own cars that do 0-60 in 3.9s. How does it compare when switching over to the Camaro? Does the Camaro feel "slow" by comparison? Most people think 7.5s is "fast", but if I'm used to 5.9s - then 7.5s is slow. So if you own a car that does 3.9s - does the 4.6s Camaro SS feel "slow"?
