In part:
"Automakers have opposed the change since the E.P.A. first signaled it last year. But now the industry says it has conducted tests that confirm the higher-ethanol blend will cause problems in many cars.
Half of the engines tested so far have had some problems, said C. Coleman Jones, the biofuel implementation manager at General Motors, who spoke on behalf of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers. "

i personally burned up a brand new weed eater due to ethanol fuel and apparently it is common that it does this. ethanol have a short shelf life, once it gets old it will ruin motors. the key is to burn it up quickly. anyone who has a garage queen will be more succeptable to problems than a daily driver

Either way, over time we adapted. We lost a lot of performance for a while. But, with modern technologies, I don'tthink we will see the same gap develop like it did after 1974. (It took until the early '90's for the manufacturers to really catch up on performance.
Ran into a guy the other day running ethanol and showing 500 ponies at the rear wheels in a 340ci motor! Granted it was 12:1 compression and had 2 carbs poking out the engine bay. .... It can be done, but he told me the floats had to be changed out.

He said it was a little over $2 / gallon. Not bad compared to the AV100 I've been running.

Wonder if anybody realizes plastic consumes more of our oil than fuel and plastic can be made from bioproducts too.

Keep in Mind that Porsche has an engineering exercise racing in ALMS.

...and I believe they are working on a street car with some of the same technology. While I am sure pricey right now, it will trickle down to us common folks eventually. Not necessarily a bad thing.

This isn't a Prius! It is something else completely!

EPA Denies E15 Waiver for Pre-2001 Cars, Permits Use in Newer Cars

This just came through the SEMA Action Network...

EPA Denies E15 Waiver for Pre-2001 Cars, Permits Use in Newer Cars
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency confirmed that there is insufficient test data to permit E15 to be used in MY 2000 and older light-duty motor vehicles. The SEMA Action Network (SAN) has consistently voiced concern that ethanol increases water formation which can then create formic acid and corrode metals, plastics and rubber. While the SAN is pleased with the decision that older cars should not be fueled with E15, the association is disappointed that the EPA issued an E15 waiver for 2007 and newer vehicles. The agency is still gathering data for the 2001-2006 vehicles. The EPA’s ruling responds to a request from the ethanol industry to raise the ethanol content in gasoline from 10 percent (E10) to 15 percent (E15).
Consumers will not see E15 at the pump any time soon. The EPA must first approve regulations on how gas stations will label their pumps to avoid consumer misfueling. This will take months. Furthermore, there is no obligation that gasoline retailers market the fuel. In fact, some retailers oppose the fuel over concern that they could be held liable if E15 damages a vehicle. The gas stations and distributors may also need to invest in new storage tanks, hoses and other equipment.
The SAN will continue to oppose E15 until there are conclusive scientific findings that demonstrate that it will not harm automobiles of any age as a result of corrosion or other chemical incompatibilities. SEMA represents thousands of companies that market products for these vehicles and, through its SEMA Action Network, millions of enthusiasts who buy and operate these automobiles.

We are pretty much the Ethanol capital of the US and we still have regular gas with no ethanol. It is, however, $0.10/gal more than the E10. I've been running 'super unleaded' (E-10) in my '99 pickup for years and have yet to have any problems with it.

I like Iowa's pumps much better because you can get 91/93 octane w/o ethanol. Same goes for 87 octane. The only gas you are forced to use ethanol in is 89, which happens to be 10 cents cheaper than 87. E85 is super subsidized in Iowa, it's almost cheap enough to offset the costs of your reduced mileage (on flex fuel vehicles) Your gas prices are still lower than Illinois, so be happy! Ever crossed the The Mississippi in the Quad Cities? Gas immediately jumps 10-20 cents AND all grades have 10% ethanol.

I too filled up my truck with 89 grade in Iowa for about 6 years. But my truck was a flex fuel vehicle... So I didn't expect to see any problems. My Camaro is running happily with E10 so far!

I would love to have that option here in Florida. Our pumps ALL say "may contain up to 10% ethanol". I assume they all do, but as a consumer you dont know and you pay the same price for whatever blend your station has. It's a take it or leave it choice in Florida.

the future will probably end up being a blend pump. You choose the % and the pump will custom blend on the spot to acomadate the different %'s=10,15,85. That way dealers can use less tanks and pumps. thats the talk I hear in iowa

Yes and were not talking about that here. Once we start increasing the percentages over 10% things are a lot different.
