YUP.. GM has been working on this since late 2007. They did testing on the Escalade's 6.2L, which is not the same as an LS3:

The experimental engine is based on GM’s current all-aluminum Gen IV 6.2L V-8 (L92) found in the Escalade, GMC Yukon Denali and Hummer H2. Depending on the application, the powerplant, which sports port fuel injection, variable valve timing (VVT) and dual-cam phasing, is rated between 380-403 hp in stock form.

However, with a little tweaking to accommodate the auto industry’s latest fuel-injection hardware, the prototype V-8 is producing “well north of 450 hp (on gasoline),” says Dave Sczomak, development engineer-GM Powertrain Advanced Engineering.
Running the engine on E85 ethanol allows for even more power to be coaxed from the big V-8, he adds, noting the 85%/15% ethanol/gasoline mix generally carries a race fuel-like 106 octane rating.

Cruising the web of test roads onsite, the Escalade motors along smoothly with a characteristic large-displacement V-8 burble. However, mashing the gas from a standstill produces a wave of power that propels the big truck at a noticeably more rapid pace than the production version.

Along with the substantial increase in horsepower, DIG also contributes to about a 10% increase in low-end torque, Sczomak says. In addition, fuel economy is moderately improved (3-6%), as are cold-start emissions of hydrocarbons.

To accommodate the DIG fueling system, GM redesigned the L92 cylinder heads, rearranging the intake ports to make room for the eight high-pressure injectors that squirt fuel directly into the side of the combustion chamber at 2,250 psi (155 bar).
New dished pistons – similar to a diesel’s – were installed for added clearance of the injectors. They also contribute to a greater compression ratio (11.5:1 vs. 10.5:1), which can be employed because of the high-octane composition of E85 and the knock-reducing cooling effect of introducing fuel directly into the cylinder.

DI normally yields about a 15-17% increase in power. Hence the reason why they can use a smaller displacement engine like a 5.5L and get 450HP. The LS3 with DI would be at about 495HP

My thoughts exactly, on paper the mustang is only a little faster so I doubt GM will go way out of the way to beat it. I have ran a few 2011 5.0s and have beat them and all I have are long tube headers w/ high flow cats, LMR CAI, and muffler delete so it wont take much for GM to be able to say its faster.

hahaha, thats a good 1, I know some v6 guys get all up in arms about it, I got a v6 because the cost of an ss + insurance is waaay to high for my age, I may just trade it in 2012 for a nice new ss :P.

Ive seen all the magazines rate the two cars, the 5.0L vs SS, and pretty much is a drivers race, some get the camaro faster, others get the 5.0L faster, but hey power bump is always good

I know the Camaro's hood is aluminum, I was a TPT in the plant for the first year of the camaro, and my dad worked in the Body shop and he said they are aluminum as well, so I dont think you'd get much of a weight savings there, but the trunk you may, I don't think its aluminum.

I think the bulk of the camaro's weight is more the frame and underpinnings, all that stuff his heavy steel, the body itself isn't that heavy, its also a bigger car than the mustang, but seriously if they could drop 300 lbs off the camaro they wouldn't even need to up the horsepower.

Honestly the power is sufficient, I think making the cars significantly lighter would be more than enough. The thing the camaro loses against the mustang is the power/weight ratio.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say
2012 SS -480hp
2012 Z28 600hp
The reason i say this is the new 6.4L hemi puts out 475hp, so i believe chevrolet will out do dodge on that one again since it seems the z28 will be gt500 competition and not srt.

These engine respond so well to bolt ons, that pulling out more power is really quite easy to do.

Im no expert but i feel like Ford has rung nearly all of the power out of that 4.9, but if I am wrong I can tell you that it is much simpler to mod a pushrod displacement over technology V8 than a DOHC with touchy sensors everywhere.

^ youve got it! I know it wouldnt happen but i would love to see a carbon fiber roof option kinda like on a BMW. Either way if GM put the camaro on weight watchers it would benefit heavily.

Maybe they should just offer more diff ratio choices like Mustang... for $375, they sacrifice highway mpg to be quicker off the line (improved 0-60 and 1/4 mile times).
