From my understanding the emissions regulations are applied to one vehicle in the class. You don't expect the corvette to disappear do you? Regulations change all the time, but sports cars remain because not every vehicle has to meet the regs. Now if Obama is changing that to where every single vehicle meets the regs say bye to pretty much every car manufacturer - those expectations are very high and you are talking about hybrids only.
Hybrids, hrm - that is a disaster in itself. With all the batteries needing replaced in 5-8 years at $5,000+ a pop not to mention environmental issues. My guess, at least one vehicle in each class must meet the requirements. However, I am not an expert by any means, I didn't even watch or read his actual plan.

I believe the 35 mpg has to be an average for the total car and truck lineup for each company. So this shouldnt be a problem. We wont see the V8 go away for quite some time.

The Camaro would still be around...
You must mean the gas-guzzling Camaro we have today? Yes, it would. The engine of the Camaro has changed many times before, it's going to keep changing. Note that future advancements will probably not hurt speed, just sound. Look at the Tesla. |

I always thought CAFE stood for "Corporate Average Fuel Economy". Meaning manufactures will always be able to sell vehicles that get lower CAFE mileage so long as they can off set that by selling more cars that get BETTER CAFE mileage.
Chevrolet will be able to sell cars like the Corvette (which BTW gets great fuel mileage) and the Camaro because they just don't sell enough of them to mess with the AVERAGE. But having said that if the new CAFE get's raised so high that only super fuel efficient cars can make/meet that standard than yes cars like the vette and camaro will be doomed. I'm hoping the American electorate wakes up before that happens. We have an election in 2010 that can send a clear signal to our elected leaders. If we chose not to participate shame on us - we deserve what happens. |

You can always drive your camaro you have now....additionally you can drop whatever engine you want in it then. They are not telling you what to drive just what to buy.

By 2012 GM should be building ELECTRIC VEHICLES lile the Tesla Roadster which has amazing performance.
If the Camaro dies so does the Corvette, Mustang, etc so so forth.

Relax.. As I have always predicted.
The LS and LT will save the Camaro.. not the SS. (no offense to SS I mean the V6 is gonna keep the line open). I propose a 2012 Camaro LC - 4 banger .. I figure the body needs 180 HP that's about it (can do the speed limit as LS is set too / tires). And also cut some stuff out like the back seats in the LC to cut production costs and offer only the 4 speed automatic 4L60E. MSRP 18999. |

Yet were burnings billions of barrels of oil yearly in our power plants vs using nuclear power, the rest of the world especially Europe has taken nicely to what we invented. Several new plants are built around the world every year but I think it's been over 30 years I believe since one has been built here. Lets not even go into clean coal burning ones. So much for being environmentally conscious we can safely store spent rods but choose to instead take our freedoms and our choices away.
On another note they changed the formula for MPG last year backhandedly and now their increasing the MPG minimum rating. What does that matter you say? Well a car that 2 years ago was rated for 30MPG now is rated at 25. So something meeting the new standards would have been rated at 40+mpg 2 years ago. If the Camaro survives it will be on a smaller lighter platform with a much smaller engine, The 3.6 V6 might end up as the top dog engine. |

Its going to be the average not just a single car. Think about it the Camaro at 24-26 is almost there anyways. Theres no reason to start being all whinny about something that hasnt happened. I always like when a decision comes out dont matter what party it is, you got people like this dont read into the whole subject and legislation and start bashing that party. And did you vote?? If not discussion stops. If so im sorry, but what 70% of people voted for this guy. So far looks like hes better than old GW

There is a formula used to get an average of MPG per class of vehicles. The averge of the class must adhere to the requirement. If some of the vehicles are gas guzzlers, then other vehicles in its class must make up the difference. The catch is that it's also based on number of units sold. The more guzzlers sold, the harder it is to be in compliance. That's one reason that cars like Vetts and Camaros are limited on production compared to others.
