When I was looking for a new car I was going to buy a Tundra. At about $38K and 14 mpg for the one I wanted, I weighed that against getting a new base model Camaro for the summer and used truck for the winter (wound up with a used 2010 SS and a 2001 Tacoma 4X4). At $26K and 30mpg, how does that compare to well optioned minivan?

Driving a Camaro has less stigma than driving a Corvette IMO, but the haters love to put the "mid-life crisis" tag on driving one. We're empty nesters, so I don't need to drive kids around, and it changes my vehicle requirements.

I get a lot of nice comments from people at work who admire the car and wish they had one, especially from the 40+ crowd. I don't feel much hate from other drivers, but my wife hates to drive the car because dudes constantly want to race her.

I always tell people that give me crap about having nice cars that if you work hard maybe someday you'll be able to have one. Have a day nice. The usually shuts them up. I could care less people think about me in that fashion anyway.

Stay in school, get good grades, and work real hard toward your goals (oh, and eat your vitamins, hulkamaniacs) and you, too, can be harassed by ne're-do-wells.

I haven't been called out...yet.

But I am a 25 year old with a 2013 2SS/RS. I cannot wait for the first person to claim that my mom/dad bought it for me when I have been saving $$$ for my first car since my first job at 14.

I keep hearing about the cost of a college education - so I went back and found my student loan papers - and went out onto the 'net to find a calculator......

In today's dollars, I borrowed $102,000 to go to college - and I paid an interest rate of 8 percent. I paid it off with hard work. My first 'living room furniture' was the redwood porch furniture from my parents' front porch.

I just go nuts when I watch some of these TV shows where a 23 year-old walks into a house or apartment and complains about the kitchen or bathroom...(This will need to be completely torn out!)

I remember Grandmother Settlemire sitting me down as I graduated from college....

She said "See here!" (and when Freda Settlemire said "see here!" - you'd BETTER pay attention!) She said "See here! You need to understand that you need to 'make do' - you can't have the standard of living right now that your parents have! It took them 30 years to get where they are! Don't borrow money for things! Pay cash! Learn to 'make do!"....."

And you know - she was a very wise person - (and I miss her so....)

The bottom line: the world does NOT owe anyone a living. And anyone who makes a crack about "privilege" needs to be put in their place.

(...want me to loan you some black suburbans to make the point???)
Amen!

i get shit all the time. I take it as a compliment. I bought a small house compared to friends who bought bigger 1800-2000sf new construction. When they comment "it must be nice to have a vette and new truck" i just respond - must be nice to live in a 200k house.

It all balances out. And since housing tanked around here im only out about 20k on my house and even at worst. They are all underwater.

They might get really ticked if i roll up in a new Z/28

yep, setting the stage to tax the hell out of them. anyhow, is anybody really surprised? all you hear anynore is "pay your fair share", "fat cats" winners of life's lottery", yada, yada yada. hell, we twice elected somebody who promised to go after those who were more successful and cheered him on as he fought to take more of what they had.

Nothing. I've been there and posted lately, but every time I check in, it shows only one member online. And then I realize that's me.

I constantly get must be nice comments kinda pisses me off. I work 6 days a week 8-12 hrs a day. I've only bought 2 new cars in my life a 00 Pontiac Bonneville for my wife ,and an 03 Silverado for me. Still own both of them! My oldest daughter graduated from college this year "Thank God" so me and my wife decided to reward ourselves. I bought her an 09 Infiniti G37 ,and she bought me a 2010 SS. Both were used. Everyone thinks ( neighbors) we won the lottery, selling drugs or something.. No we saved searched and found them at great prices. I really didn't give a rats ass when they would trade theirs in every two yrs now they have so much negative equity on their vehicles their payments are more than me and my wife's put together! Burns me up ! But their wives are always asking for rides!

I'm 20, I bought my own Camaro, parents didn't help me at all, well, my dad helped me negotiate the price. :] No CO signer, I can pay my Loan off now if I wanted but it's a great way to build credit, 95% of the people I know don't have a grand in their names... :/ SO sad.

Next time just tell them you didn't pay for it. "The government gave it to me for paying so much in taxes helping sorry asses like yourself stay on welfare and disability."

Unfortunately I know several people who are just that. Choose to fake disabilities, yet continue to live a normal life while collecting social security disability.

The best I heard the other day was a 22 year old who posted on his FB that "parents shouldn't make changes in their lives that affect their kids lives..." Now this "kid" is in the Navy, and his parents still give him money. Well apparently that recently stopped because Dad retired, they are stuck with a house in IL they can't sell, and moved down south. I wanted to punch this kid for being an arrogant little shit. Parents need an ass kicking too, but it seems this generation feels privileged and deserving based on all the likes he got.
