Bringing this subject back to life.
Check out the latest pic of the rad and the mail box slot.
Depending on what is in front of the slot I bet an after market company will develop an intake system to butt right up to it and instant cold air.
Looks like there will be a way. I think right in front of the slot is the grill also.

There's already been extensive discussion about this, and I'm afraid it will be as close to impossible as you can get without being absolutely impossible.

There is structure, unit body components, and the radiator top that runs directly between the slot and the curve of the air intake tube.

Unfortunately, the slot is just for show and it will only be for show.

Rad top and cap looks like you can get around ( over top of it ) I bet you someone will have a template to cut a hole through it.
Time will tell.

edit- back on topic...i think the scoop gives it a more agressive look but it woudl be great if it CAME functional...if i get the ss wont mind doing it myself....

I am not sure there is enough room to create any ram air effect there properly. You also need to design a ram air with water in mind. It can't just be an air filter sitting up against that slot. In heavy rain it will get saturated slowing air travel and risking water lock. Usually ram air designs take this into account and are built a little trickier but still allowing for "ram".

I bet something will be created though. There vararam for the corvette is one of the most loved intakes out there and it has the same idea that you guys are suggesting here.

Disclaimer: IMHO

Absolutely HATE the fake slot. Hate the fake scoops on the G8 hood. Hated the fake scoops on the hood of my 1984 Z28.

I like the Dremel ideas, it would cool the engine bay some, and I wouldn't feel like an idiot driving a car with fake scoops. (Except the rear fender vents)

I owned a 1969 Camaro, so the rear fender vents seem OK, because they were fake back then too. A long history of fake vents.

Why do they spare the Corvette of fake scoops, but insist on designing them into anything else they feel appropriate?

Try Google

http://www.leftlanenews.com/pontiac-g8-gt-review.html

The G8’s hood features a raised center line as well as twin non-functional hood scoops. While the center line adds to the G8’s taut look, the hood scoops give the otherwise upscale car a boy racer look. Not only do the scoops look out of place on a large sedan, once you discover they’re purely decorative, they become almost irritating. A few folks at General Motors reportedly share the same sentiment as us, and a hood “no-scoops” option might become available in the near future. Look for the high-performance Pontiac G8 GXP to sport hood scoops, but those ones will be functional.

Don't forget the G8's fake fender vents...

Functional, means it feeds air to the intake, as in Ram air.

sorry i beg to differ since i have looked at them and they are simply vents. they pass through . they may not feed into a ram air set up but they do function.
