That puts it square in the entry level Corvette range ($48,930 MSRP). Not sure how the two would stack up performance-wise but IF I had that kind of money to spend my preference would be the vette.

I'm pretty certain that the Corvette would be the better performer, however, I don't know too many people in the market for a GT500 that cross-shop a Corvette.

What else would you cross shop it with?

Or is it in a class of its own?

Ford released 2011 GT500 pricing today....

'11 GT500 Coupe (including Destination & Delivery) MSRP = $49,495.
'11 GT500 Convertible (including Destination & Delivery) MSRP = $54,495.

Optional equipment....

$2,340 = Electronics Package
$3,495 = SVT Performance Package
$1,295 = Shaker 1000 Audio System
$1,995 = Glass Roof
$ 375 = Shelby Car Cover

Order Banks are open.
That seems like about roughly a ~2k base increase over the 2010 for the Alum block and other technology upgrades? Sounds like a winner......

In the world of logic it would be the Corvette and SRT8s. Obviously the Challenger fails miraculously against the GT500. I recall a Mustang guy saying something about Shelby always going after the Corvette, so I guess that means they're cross-shopped lol.

I said I don't know many people that cross-shopped the GT500 and a Corvette, not that people might not do it.

In my case, I have two children, so I wanted a performance-oriented car that they could ride in when we go to local cruise-ins or track events. That ruled out a Viper, Corvette or any other two-seater right off the bat.

In other cases, folks were die-hard Ford guys and would never even consider a Corvette no matter how much more performance they got for their money.

In yet other cases, folks were looking to buy a musclecar, not a sportscar.

Yep, vettes are cool, but just not for me (no 2-seater). I cross-shopped the Challenger SRT, Camaro SS, and GT500.

True, the GT500 is the most pony car you can get from the factory. I guess I was thinking of adding the corvette to my Camaro instead of another pony car Not that I would complain about owning either!

So I guess, that means you put it in a class of its own? Unless you still want to compare it to the SRT8 still. Which i honestly think no one would buy a SRT8 over a GT500 unless they're just hardcore Mopar fans.

Yes, it is true that Carroll Shelby had his sights set on the Corvette, but not with his Mustang offerings.

Congrats on the purchase. Did you end up getting the red/silver combo your spoke about? If so, you have a twin to mine.

I don't know about that. Despite the performance gap between the two cars, the SRT8 Challenger is still a great looking car with a pedigree and not just to Mopar fans. Personally, I'd like to eventually have a modern GT500, Camaro and Challenger in the garage, as there are things I like about all three.

Now, I understand that you want me to say that the GT500 is "in a class by itself" but that is not going to happen. Because it is not. Whether you agree or not, the SRT8 is certainly in the same "class" as the GT500. While most would disagree, the Camaro SS is also in its "class" as the highest performance version of a GM-produced ponycar currently offered.
