Thank you.

I hope they find a solution for the shifting problems. On the S197's torque limiters seemed to reduce the problem as did a new clutch/flywheel.

Good luck to everyone.

I like the forum so I'm going to hang around... if I get fanboi'ish... call my dumb ass out.

Has anyone noticed that their shifts become notchier as the transmission temp climbs to 180 deg? I'll say that some of my smoothest shifts have been right at the middle tick mark between 30 and 180 - which is contrary to what I've heard that this transmission needs to be warmed up to shift correctly. Based on what I've experienced, it's the other way around - I think it needs to stay cooler than it is.

I can't shift to 3rd or 4th on high RPM's without that horrible grind...

only solution: shift before 6.5K... which really really really sucks...

Kind of defeatts the purpose doesn't it? Jacked up shifted won't let you run it to the redline.

I have about 700 miles on mine and finally cranked it up a bit yesterday, ground the snot out of second gear. I freaked out so I tried it again and ground it again... I seriously doubt it's me, I have 19 cars of which 15 are manuals, and have been driving them for 40+ years. Decided to do a search on the subject and found this thread. It's pretty sad to have a two week old car and already wondering if I made a huge mistake.

Yeah it is a problem that can't really be solved ... only reduced.

Took mine in for the grinding and they found lots of internal damage to the tranny, replaced synchros and such, just got the car back yesterday (complete with serious damage to the hood!). Has anyone who got theirs "repaired" actually had the problem go away?

Two other interesting things, the first thing the dealer did was check the programming for an aftermarket tune. The second thing was require the short shifter be removed.

What kind of short shifter do you have? Makes me wonder about these tranny's, my car has 1400miles on it and it's already had a new tranny put in at 700 miles, due to excessive noise/rattle... I have a MGW shifter on it now, the reason I ask what type you have, is because some short shifters don't replace the entire shift mechanism, unlike the MGW, so I don't see why the dealer would have a problem with any shifter that didn't...like the hurst. Did he give you a reason why he wanted the short shifter removed? My dealer said it doesn't void the warranty :S

Shifter is/was a Barton, which is a full replacement shifter. The dealer said the GM rep required the stock shifter be on the car prior to them working on it.

The first (local) dealer I took it to refused to work on it because they claimed the Flowmaster cat-back voided the warranty. It seems some dealers are going WAY out of their way to not fix cars. I ended up taking it back to the selling dealer 75+ miles away. Now I just hope they fix the damage they did to the hood.

Just an update since starting this thread; Per dealer incouragement, I continued to drive as the grinding became progressively worse, keep in mind I was taking my frustration out on it as well..

Finally refused to engage second a week ago, 5k miles. GM originally reccomended repair, 2nd gear, synchros, main shaft, and various other parts. When parts were unavailable, they sent replacement tranny. Just got it back yesterday, taking it easy on it for awhile, but so far so good.

Glad to hear they took care of you! Sucks that they make us drive it till it breaks before doing anything about it! Oh well, alls well that ends well! Let us know how the new one is after driving it a while!
