I don't know why, but with 'vettes, I'm always intriqued by the latest and greatest model. Sure, I will always like the muscle car era 'vettes, but with the newer generation models, every time a new one comes out it seems to make the older ones seem.......well.......old. If I bought a GS now, I'd want to get rid of it when the next generation 'vette comes out.

I don't think that will be the case with the new Z28. I think it will always be admired for being the highest HP Camaro ever made since the next generation will probably be lighter with less HP. The design is also iconic and at least to me, a once in a lifetime type of car. I think that the 2012 Z28 will be admired like the late '60s Camaros were. I really want one if they are what we all think that they are going to be. I think it will be a car that ends up in my will.

Now if you put the 556hp CTSV engine in a 4000lb Camaro. (current weight is 3800lbs.) The power to weight ratio is a lot better for the Camaro. If the Camaros HP comes in at 575HP or more...obviously the advantage grows. Expect to see 2012 Z28s in the 11's in the 1/4.
But having said all that. I think the GS is a nice car. I hope you enjoy it. I personally would wait for the Z/28. Unless of course you can get both.
Here's what autoblog said about the Callaway SC572, which arguably is a close spec to what we think the Z28 will be. The numbers are impressive:

What a difference a blower makes. As mentioned, horsepower is up by 146 ponies in the SC572 and torque rises by 121 to net 541 lb-ft. That's beyond tire-shredding power and close to what the long-rumored LSA-stuffed Z28 Camaro would bring to the performance table, if not a smidge more. However, we wouldn't be surprised to learn that Callaway's horsepower rating is a bit on the conservative side. The SC572 pulls and pulls hard, delivering the kind of straight-line acceleration that you want from anything with four wheels. The numbers bear this out: the run from 0-60 mph happens in a supercar quick 3.9 seconds and Callaway claims the quarter-mile is dispatched in a Shelby GT500-smacking 11.9 seconds at 120 mph. The forward oomph is simply wonderful.

BTW... I've been drag racing at dragstrips since 1986. I know a little bit about it.

GS 6spd manual
1-2.97
2-2.07
3-1.45
4-1.0
5-.71
6-.56

Final gear ratio-3:42/1

Camaro SS 6spd manual
1-3.07
2-2.07
3-1.43
4-1.0
5-.84
6-.57

Final gear ratio-3:45/1
I only pointed that out because people around here think it's only about hp and weight. they forget a lot of the other stuff. especially when they are only bench racing.

let someone else take that showroom hit-

Coolest I am in a similar situation. Would rather have a 500+ hp camaro but dont want to mod an ss, and am having a hard time waiting for the Z. So my solution will be (seeing how the summer up here is already shot) picking up a used low mile Z06 next spring, enjoy the summer and sell in fall. Then order a Z28 winter of 11'-12'. I am seeing 09 Z06's in the 50's and 08s in the high 40s with fairly low miles. Definetly not a "corvette guy" but 505hp at 3100lbs for the summer with little loss on resale will get me through till the Z arrives.

Well, It a good time to get a Corvette prices are down..

Right now there is 3,000 rebate on the Corvette.. Can you use your points with that as well?

Kerbeck has 11,000 off window on 2010 Grand Sports.

The Gt500 has performance right on par with the grand sport. I would think the z28 should be in the same ballpark.

If it were me I would go with the z28....it will be more rare for the next couple years. Looks are subjective but the camaro already has great looks...and if GM makes it look even better with the z28 it could be killer. I wouldnt pass it up in the 50k range compared to the vette.

I know less vettes are produced...but the same body style has been on the road for 6 years. I see more corvettes than camaros around here.

It doesn't matter to me...but a lot of people like to have a car that they dont see very often...the z28 will definitely be that for a couple years.

Performance...right on par with the vette
Price...should be slightly cheaper than a GS (going by msrp...but still speculation)
Rarity...the z28 will be more rare.
Looks....man thats a tough one...I would call it a tie. But its hard to say because we havent seen a production z28

I would pick the z28. But I am a camaro guy. If I were middle of the road it would be a toss up IMO. You should test drive and take a good look at both and make a decision.

I agree with most of your points, but what I have bolded above is untrue. I just watched a video (Car & Driver, I believe) that pitted the two cars against each other and the GS Vette went around that particular road track 3 seconds faster, which is a lifetime in the track world. While the GT500 may accelerate and run the 1/4 in the same time as the Vette, it cannot compete on the road course (which is where every bit of performance is wrung out of a car - not just acceleration and horsepower). That is exactly the thing that I hope the Z/28 will change...I want it to be a world-class handling car...which I fear is wishful thinking.

.

Can you put the 4k in Credit Card/GM Bonus points down as a deposit on a 2012 Z28?

If possible, that's exactly what I'd do.

Uhm, NOT... ME.

For one thing, how many girls can you fit into a 'vette? The Z28 will hold more.

For another thing...

'vettes are sekzy, but faster isn't always better.

It's like comparing an F-16 to an A-10.

Why don'cha stand in front of my 30mm Vulcan cannon so I can take a snapshot.
