I would think by the time they are done putting the 5.0 in the Mustang, it will probably hit 3900 lbs, I say that because the GT500 comes in a 3900.

Maybe, but some of the GT500 weight is the plumbing and support for the supercharger, and the forged Iron block is 100+ lbs more than a similar sized Alum block would be.

The crash test standards you mention wont have to be met until the 2013 MY/2012 CY, which likely means this generation of Mustang will never have to meet those standards or, if they know they will be producing this car through the 2012 model year, it almost certainly was designed to meet them already.

Seriously, the whole safety issue weight gain slant on this is, IMHO, something a few insiders lurking around came up with to explain away the Camaro's weight and the buying public...well....bought it. It has been blown out of proportion.

They do not meet the 2012 regs. The Roof crush test went up from 1.5 to 3x's the vehicles unloaded weight. Same goes for the door reinforcments. They are being strengthened to take harder impacts. Currently The Mustang is up to the 2010 standards, but there are tougher standards coming. All of them have to be in place by 2012.

So all I am saying is that in the future, the mustang will have to get heavier, while the Camaro will not.

That`s all I really have to say about that though.

P.S.: I am suprised this thread hasn`t resorted to name calling yet like most of these other mustang threads have in the last little while.

Maybe we are all starting to get along

First never said the top of Ford were idiots. Second, show me in writing where it says the 5.0 Mustang motor will be 400hp. Its stated it is capable of...does not mean they will make it that way. We all know the 4.6 is capable of way more than what Ford gave it, so whats to say the 5.0 wont be the same way. From insiders at several places stated the 2010 was suppost to have 350hp. We see how that went. If the hp is more than what it has now and gains less weight than the competion (Camaro, Challenger) then there is no reason to give it all 400hp. 375hp plus a truck load of go fast goodies avalible from the dealers at release would be reason to make more money. You want the full 400hp well you can have it, just have to buy the extras that bump it up to those numbers.

Chevy can improve many things about the Camaro -- economic status be damned. If the car sells, they aren't going to leave it stagnant. Especially if they intent to compete with the foreign offerings in the sports coupe segment.

As for the aftermarket for the 5.0....it will be zero at the beginning, but it'll catch up. It's a Mustang for goodness sakes.

Well I agree with you that eventually the Mustang will have to put on some lb's in the name of safety, do you have any literature that states the Camaro meets the 2012 Safety regs?

And yes this thread seems to be moving along nicely. Little maturity goes a long way.

A few members on this board were wondering why their insurance was so cheap and were told that the car gets a discount because it meets 2012 reqs.

I'm still standing by the assertion that we don't actually know that the Mustang wont meet those standards, we just know that it does meet the current standards. To my knowledge Ford has never commented on the Mustan'g ability to pass the newer rollover test one way or the other.

This is a point worth talking about because Ford had their own rollover testing program in place before the government conceived their own, and the truth is we don't know what Ford's standards are. For all we know Ford's standards are stricter than the fed and Mustang would have passed the test in 2005. That said, I do know that Ford plans to produce the Mustang chassis as is through the 2012 model year at the very least so, if there is to be weight gain, it wont happen until the 2013 model year at the earliest. And that jives with the new standards which go into effect for the 2012 calender year IIRC, meaning late production 2012 model year model year cars would be the models initially affected.

Ford's roof sure as hell passed rollover. Even the Glass one to my knowledge. Having driven both the Camaro and Mustang, I can say that it definitely will pass the '12 standards. Under my heavy-handedness while handling the cars, they came off as both pretty beefy and good for a wreck.

So now we can pretty much say that if that Honda/Toyota/Unidentifiable Ricemobile tries to run us off the road.. we can just turn their car to tin scrap to be used for our new replacement front fascias.
