I have a question regarding the winter.

What is the best thing to do for our cars when we can't drive them for a month or so? If I go out and start it every few days and run it for a while will that be ok? I don't know if I there is a time period of not using it that I may hurt my car.

If the roads are dry and not salty I might drive around not sure I guess I just need to see how the winter goes.

You have to be careful with the "Summer" tires. It's not the wet it's the temps that affect them. I believe anything under 45 degrees and you could have traction issues.

It's debatable if it's a good idea to start it up or not if you're not going to move it. If you start it up just make sure to get it up to temp before you shut it off. I think if you start it up for a couple of minutes that's bad.

If you're worried about the battery just disconnect it or get a batter tender on it. I think Sears has them for like $25.

That's my two cents.

Well my friends... the Halloween lights are all down and put away. It was fun while it lasted. Christmas lights go up in a few weeks!

Gotta take a little ride in ol' Lightning. Then gotta hit the homework. Aargh.

Disconnecting the battery will help but won't cure the issue with batteries. There is a lot of electronics in the car that is still going even when the car isn't being used. So your battery will discharge. But a lead acid battery will still discharge by itself if completely disconnected. Best to get a battery tender. I think they are worth the money if you are going to let the car sit. SSOOCH is right about the tires. Below 45 degrees the rubber of a "summer" tire like the Pirelli's gets much harder. That makes it have far less traction. Just be careful driving in cold weather if you keep the same tires on the car.

Now you've got a total of 4 cents worth of advice!

Yes I do understand that about the tires and wouldnt want to drive with the temps being to low. However what about the car having gas in it and sitting for a few months? Should I run it low then .. And what is a battery tender? is it like a charger ? Yeah I know lots about cars don't I lol.. Hey I was married to a Mechanic for 16 years I didn't have to do anything..

As far as winter tires I cant afford that for this winter and when I do I want to get different rims to run my winter tires so I don't ruin my current rims.

thanks for the info....

Ssooch your still the leader lol

Gem, top off the gas if your going to park it. Putting fuel stabilizer in it is a great idea as well.

A tender IS a charger with some extra electronics in it. The extra electronics do two things, they make sure the battery doesn't get over charged (which it would if you just put a charger on it full time for the winter), and they make sure that when the charge drops to a certain point the charger kicks in and charges the battery up a bit. They were invented when cars started having electronics in them that doesn't really shut off. Like security systems, radios that keep a memory of their stations, even the computer that remembers all the parameters about how your engine operates - they all use a little bit of power when the car is shut down. I'm not sure but OnStar might use some too. Clear as MUD?

You will definitely want a battery tender and some stabilizer. Come on over to Frank Edwards Co on parkway blvd and i will get you a deal... I may have my car sooner than later as my dealer just called and said it has an ETA of 11/12.
