A 15 HP gain is more than 10% out of the box.

Some of the results of intake, exhaust and tune for the Sonic are in this thread:

http://www.sonicownersforum.com/forum/t2267/

There is a baseline dyno if you go further in.

so out of curiosity how far has anyone gone on a tank of gas? I know someone has done a long trip and pushed it almost to the last drop.

You OEM guys want everything to work forever

The Ecotec is pushed to the limit and if you do anything to it it will explode and BAM! GM release the turbo upgrade through GMPP

GM has a 100K warranty in place which means they think it should go 120K or more. We are not doing anything crazy with a CAI and a tweak to the boost so in this case almost is 50% with anything more a plus.

Unlike some of my LS based GM projects this one won't see the strip or road course. It will see some AC time. I want to take the Sonic from a nicely done econo hatch to a more fun to drive hatch along the lines of a GTI.

Turbocharged
Engine: 2.0L in-line four-cylinder DOHC with variable valve timing
Premium unleaded fuel
Fuel economy: EPA (08):, 21 MPG city, 31 MPG highway, 25 MPG combined and 364 mi. range
Gasoline direct fuel injection
14.5gallon fuel tank
Power (SAE): 200 hp @ 5,100 rpm; 207 ft lb of torque @ 1,800 rpm
Curb Weight 3,325

Sonic 138 HP
Curb Weight 2,900 (I haven't scaled it yet)

If we can get to 170, Brembo fronts, Coilovers, Wheels and Tires... I'll know more after the baseline and then the CAI run. If there really are 15 low hanging ponies another pound of boost will get us close to the target. IF

I have seen those numbers. I may have grown up in Chicago, but apparently spent some time in Missouri the show me state. We have 2,300 miles on the Sonic so we should get a fair reading on the dyno. After that we'll know. I'll be sure to get the dyno runs on video so you'll know if the power is there or not.

I've fillled up on several occasions with only 1/2 gallon or so left in the tank.

I'm not even sure what GM uses for the statistical life for a powertrain. You are correct, if it is warrantied for 100,000, it has demonstrated reliability well beyond that simply for a business case that says you don't have to do much warranty work on higher milage cars and trucks.

Think of it this way, though. If you Camaro (or any car for that matter) only lasted for 100,000 miles, you be pretty well and rightly POed.

I hope that GMPP comes up with a Calibration for the 1.4L. I haven't heard much of it for the 2.0T and that is what the GMPP Cal was deveoped for in the Sky, Solstice, Cobalt and HHR. That would be a nice upgrade for the Buick's currenlty running the 2.0T.

The other engine that I would love to see is the 1.6T used in the Astra. 180 hp stock.

http://www.fastestlaps.com/cars/opel..._16_turbo.html

Doesn't get a real special 0 - 60 in the Astra which is the same size as the Cruze, but I'd love to see it in the Sonic. Not sure it packages though, but that to me would be a nice upgrade.

I'm wondering if GM will ever throw DI into the 1.4T.

Also, happy birthday to Pete.

JusticePete proposes to do his own dyno. Works for me. There are many other 1.4T dynos posted, but the above posted link had the various iterations in one place.

I notice the standard engine for the Astra is the 1.4T and the optional upgrade is the 1.6T, which leads me to hope the Sonic engine compartment could accept the 1.6T w/o extensive engineering. I suspect a DI version of the 1.4T is out there but either not ready for prime time or the additional cost of production precludes its use, at least for now.

JusticePete, Number 3, and ShnoMac, I would love to see this discussion on the Sonic Owners Forum, but I am enjoying it here.

Laborsmith, welcome to the house.

This is just one of many little topics that get discussed in here.

I think that GM has to make a commitment to the small car with some performance beyond just handling. They dipped their toe in the water with some packages they showed at SEMA, but those I think were just chassis (correct Pete?).

GM has already announced the Astra GTC for Europe but with Ford announcing the Focus ST at a very reasonable price, I am hoping GM counters with something more than chassis upgrades.

GM has a whole slew of engines available for markets other than the U.S., the 1.6T is just one of those.

But you also have to keep in mind GM offered up some pretty incredible SS pieces with the Cobalt SS and HHR SS. I've driven both and they WERE pretty sweet rides. But were is the key here. There wasn't enough sales volume to keep those models in production. So sadly the buying public has given GM the ammo to NOT go there. I hope they change their minds and soon.

Thanks.

The Z28 is already in my avatar. Also, I really like the lighting and coloring in the shot in my signature, and I like the old school blue bow tie on that car.
