ALL LANES OF I-40 WESTBOUND IN NORTH CAROLINA HAVE BEEN REOPENED IN HAYWOOD COUNTY

All lanes of I-40 Westbound in North Carolina have been reopened in Haywood County following the previous rock slide. Motorists are advised to use caution and expect delays in the area, as 1 of 2 lanes remains closed near Exit 451 (Waterville Road) in Tennessee for maintenance following the rock slide.

Updated information on the rock slide is also available from the TDOT Website.

its a "risk" to go that route... just as its a risk for the thousands of people who travel that road every single day.

I'm not saying that there won't be issues taking that route, but thats the route I'm going.

Mainly because going the ATL route will add way too much time and distance to the drive. IMO, it doesn't make sense to me to drive 2 hours south to turn around and head back north.

I've driven I-40 east and west bound via asheville more times than I can count (family in IL and all over TN). I've experienced one active rockslide and saw the aftermath of another. Its a risk to take, just like driving on the road in general. Never know when that semi is going to blow a steering rod and wipe you off the side of the highway.

If it is opened back up, that is the better way to go for sure. I just wanted to make sure, as last time it took them months to clear it out.

I'm keeping an eye on it.

one thing I can say is that I don't want to be underprepared for this event

672 Blue Sky Parkway
Lexington, KY 40509

is the planned Lexington stop over. huge parking lot, 4 gas stations and fast food nearby. its just outside Lexington which should help with getting off and on the interstate.

I'm working on the rest of the stop-over points (I've got them written down somewhere, but can't find where I stored the info).

also, I will be looking for "pack leaders" who would help me coordinate lane changes, on/off ramps, parking, etc.

Currently, I've got someone from each of the other car groups that will be coordinating with me to basically be in charge of their group so that if we get into traffic or we get separated (flat tire, potty breaks, etc). Their group can detach from the main convoy and take care of their own, then catch back up with us.

We are going to have a lot of cars on the road at one time and I want everyone to get to the fest and back home safely with their cars intact.
