My podunk town..but there are many trainwatchers that love the podunk town.

The TY tower, left, about 1990.
It was built in 1899 to regulate train traffic after a massive wreck occurred at this intersection of three railroads. More recently the configuration of the tracks was altered to form a safer crossing, negating the need for the tower. It was razed in the early 1990s.

Tuscola Illinois. I beat feet out of there a long time ago. Now my perspective has changes and if I could make a living there I would consider moving back. But it snows there. It doesn't here in tampa fl

Awesome thread!

One of my favorite places on the CP line is the "Spiral Tunnels".

They are located west of Lake Louise, Alberta and east of Field, B.C. Truly awesome to see a long intermodul train going through the tunnels. Plus being set in the Rocky Mountains doesn't hurt the view either.

And I will be heading right by there next weekend when heading the the B.C./Alberta Camaro meet that is in Revelstoke. We are actually stopping there for a break. Hopefully there is a train rolling through at the time.

Man, that is awesome... I can only wonder what Hunter will do with the CP in the coming years.

Great website for rail photos. Lots of different railroads, and most of them are in hi-def.

When I would take the run to jersey we would follow the Hudson all the way down. Going thru the tunnel at west point.

Crash Smash eXplode...

I'll be smiling when I fall asleep now.

Whats your take (as a CN conductor) on Positive Train Control? Everyone I work with (different rr different department) is under the impression that PTC is just this evil anti worker program designed to eliminate jobs under the disguise of safety.

I somewhat agree, but I know the UTU and BLET are petitioning the FRA to require two man crews on all trains after the fiasco in Canada... That would help put a lot of us at ease.

They have been trying to go to one man crews for years.

Fine thread, this one!

I have a question relating to locomotive headlights. It used to be that there was one (or two) headlights mounted high on the front of the engine. Around 5 years or so ago two more were added low and to the left and right, in a triangle fashion as viewed from the front. I have seen, occasionally, at a rail crossing where the front locomotive's two lower lights flash alternately when approaching, then change to solid when running down normal track. However, here in Minnesota, land of the BNSF and CP the front lights are solid at roadway crossings.

The question I have, is this a new safety mandate that is coming, or is this a railroad choice to use that capability? Or is it a passenger train feature, and passenger service is quite rare thru the twin cities, with one daily train that gets here around 10pm locally and I just don't see it in use.

In any case, what can you tell me about headlight operation?

The lights flash as soon at you blow the whistle, it is just too get your attention just like the wig wag lights on cops and ambulance. No idea why some don't it is supposed to be a fra law that they do.
