Semi-true...NATO names of other countries aircraft do that. MiG-15 Midget (for multi-role) or Fagot (for fighter).
The Air Force's aircraft were more recently named after birds of prey F-16 Fighting Falcon, F-15 Eagle (then Strike Eagle when they made it better F-15E). But, I think since we didn't want to get to the F-35 Ragin' Robin or Bludgeoning Blue Jay, we had to go back to the old school WWII naming conventions (it's the Lightning II). I think the F-17 never got an official name though; Cobra was taken already by the AH-1.

I am a weapons loader on USAF aircraft, I've worked on A-10s and F-16s. Just sayin

and Camaro is a good enough name for me no need to call it anything else, its a small vicious animal that eats mustangs.

Lawn Dart is aptly named because of the single point of failure (one engine), and the fly by electronics with a back up of more electronics, other fighter/bomber jockey's decided since they tended to end up with their noses in the ground with one malfunction, they should be lawn darts.

My favorite is the B-52 Stratofortress or BUFF (Big Ugly Fat Fu#ker).
