More air below the filter is a mute point...U can only take in what the engine needs and the air filters smooth the incoming air after the upper lid...

Now as the engine needs more air then u could argue having more in the lower part of the box would be better but thats only in theory and of course cooler air too...I still see the SLP tube and stock air box and stock scoops doing a good job, granted ADM has thought the same way with designing their intake..

Very good design, We did make 610RWHP with a maggie, cam, headers, exhaust and the ADM RACE KIT..

Its a well thought out CAI

For my car I am sticking with my SLP TUBE and modded Stock Air Box

You could duct air to the plastic piece location but I doubt that would do anything more than just taking it off. If you want to feed fresh air to the "box" area, there are a couple hoods that have ducting built in that opens up above the filter area. The ADM Race version is nice but if you're interprising enough to want to build a duct from the mailslot, you could easily construct a deflector like the ADM has. There are many water bottle replacement pieces out there. Taking the waterbottle out will open up a lot more fresh air from the bottom. The question is, how much will it help. Most of the better OEM location CAI's keep your IAT's within 2-5 degrees of ambient at cruise.
Had a chance to look around under the hood and have a couple of ideas in getting fresh air into the engine compartment. As far as the mail slot goes fabricating a scoop is not a problem, getting air from it into the engine bay is not a problem but the problem is that it's opening is to small to allow enough air passage to make it worth the effort. As mentioned I do see a couple of possibilities, after reaserching the idea some more to see if my thoughts are correct I'll be happy to share them.

I have been looking into this some more and here is what I now think. Altering the way the air flows on these vehicle should be done with some caution and here is why I think so. Air is coming in through your upper and lower grilles, this air flow is pretty much directed to pass through your condenser and radiator to allow for maximum cooling, while the car is standing idle, the fans draw the air through the components as cooling does not happen without air movement, in addition while your car is in motion I believe that air is not drawn into your engine compartment from underneath I think pehaps the opposite, the movement of air under your car most likely has a venturi effect and draws hot air out and allows for maximum air flow. The scoop and snorkel allows the engine to draw fresh air. If the snorkel wasn't there you would be working against yourself. The air in your engine compartment has been heated by passing through your radiator pulling it's heat with it. This is the hottest air in your engine area, quite the opposite of what a CAI is "supposed to do". By adding scoops or deflectors to help draw air toward the intake will help in this area but will also take some air flow away from the radiator and may interupt the way the air flows causing higher temperatures, again in theory undisireable. So the most realistic solution is to add a vent to supply air to the engine compartment and gettng it there without taking away from the air flow design GM has engineered, I am sure that their extensive use of wind tunnels and CAD has this working quite efficiently. As mentioned there are hood designs which will eliminate the problem but I am looking at another method myself.

Being a hopeful future 5th gen owner, I am a bit shocked and disappointed to learn that the mailslot is just cosmetic. However, this isn't the first time GM has done this sort of thing...see gen 4 hoods.

With that said, here is my $0.02...
I have a '06 Magnum R/T with a K&N CAI. The K&N intake system has a heat shield but it is far from a sealed system. These cars have a very similar panel as noted by the OP. With this panel in place, the engine temp runs at about 212°F. Without the panel, the engine temp runs at 207°F. With the panel in place, the engine seems a bit starved for air at the higher rpm range and pulls a good bit of engine compartment air in to compensate. Without the panel, the engine pulls hard the whole way through the rpm range with a constant source of fresh air . So, with consideration that this is not exactly a direct apples to apples comparison, I can say that from my personal experience there is some validity to the OP's claims.

Does it steal some air from the radiator? Sure. Does that matter? Not really. You are pulling air off of the side of the radiator. Your not blocking it. So, in reality, there is no disadvantage to the radiator. However, you will allow a more direct source of fresh air to the intake.

What about rain/snow getting to the intake? Look at the path that the air must take to get to the intake. Let's say that you are moving at 35mph. That rain/snow will go into the radiator before it wil make all of the turns necessary to get pulled into the intake. Some may make it the whole way to the intake, but I doubt this would be anyworse than driving in high humidity.

The mailslot can be made to add additional airflow to the grill duct as posted,You can mark these words right now,its coming!

BTW-Our race system works great at replacing hot air in the airbox,we actually doubled its size over the last few months, those that order the latest Race system will get the latest revision at no additional cost -

Ideas and thoughts foster discussion.Don't worry about the know it all's.They are everywhere. They only get their power from attacking others while they attempt to make their self appear to be superior in their thinking. When they really are insecure. Your thoughts are all Good.Just look at the discussion that they have generated. Both Good and Bad !
to you!!!!

Its hard to see but in this pic you can see on the two sides some aluminum under the grill.
I made fillers to take up the space from the old location of the scoop, To the radiator of the car so all the air go's in the Radiator.

Seriously?????? Are you guys really arguing over a piece of plastic. Once you guys actually know what the hell your talking about, you'll look back on this exact thread and say to yourself I am stupid!!!!! In all reality there is no way (rules of physics) this piece of plastic will rob or increase power. If you think it will, put a NOS sticker on your window for 100 + hp...............
