Here in Sweden, Europe the media has just got hold on this. Here they claim that the solution will be to put a button beside the key, which you then will have to press before turning the key to Off.

I have no idea where they have gotten this idea from, but it's what they write.

I had a Pontiac Fiero many many years ago, and that one had a similar solution. Might have been a 1989 Toyota Celica I had just prior to the Fiero. Memory's fading

I have a 2014 on order my self, has been waiting since last September. I'm supposed to get it delivered next week. If they mess that up I will go crazy

Those buttons were just to keep from turning the car to lock not turning the car off. I have had them on several cars including my S10.

The key on the left is from my sons 2013 Ford Fusion. (switchblade) The key in the middle is my Camaro, and the Key on the right is from my F-150. The Fusion key is the biggest one. Is Ford going to recall those too???

If you really hate the new style (which we haven't seen confirmed pictures of yet) then don't do the recall. If you need to for some reason, only take in one of your switchblade keys and tell them you can't find the other one. Then you can still use your 2nd switchblade and comply with the recall.

If you really want to have two switchblade keys, get a spare or two off ebay and have the dealer cut it for you ASAP. Since they don't have the recall details (or likely the replacement fobs yet), you may be able to get that done still. Trade it in and still have two (or more) switchblade keys even after doing the recall.

I was in to my dealer yesterday and told the service manager not to bother calling me when he starts the replacement process.

Good idea. I don't plan to take mine in, but for those that have the dealership service their car, I wonder if they'll swap the key "as a courtesy" the next time its in for service... those folks might want to follow your advice.

Most dealers do not have the machine to cut the new style keys so they order the key/fob from GM pre-cut and they just need to be programmed which only takes a few seconds.

GM may not fill the order if it is placed for the new key/fob due to the pending recall but you can try. If you don't want the recall performed just tell the dealer and they won't order the parts for it and if they do don't bring the car back in to have it performed.

When they connect the car to their system to program the new key and transmitter, they'll most likely delete all current keys and transmitters. Rendering current and keys/transmitters useless. Its actually an option in the programming menu.

Then they'll hand the happy or not so happy customer their new keys and fobs.

I drive my ZL1 with the seat all the way back. When I lift my right knee, my knee is stopped by the bottom of the steering wheel. It does seem unlikely that I would ever actually bump the key in the manner described.

That said, I read the article in the New York Times quoting a safety engineer saying the results are usually "catastrophic" if it happens.

So I will comply with the recall and any related fix.

Those who suggest someone is not a good driver if they can't handle this car at 70 mph following a loss of power steering, power brakes, and the like, perhaps in the rain, or at night, to me that is whistling past the graveyard a bit too much. I have nothing to prove to any of you.

But if something rare happens with the current set up, and when it does, it could kill another person, well heck, let's not be so stubborn.

I plan on waiting and watching for more details, but I plan on complying.

Probably not. They are not on anybody's radar. They will just stop making the key.

That won't work as the new fob will have a different code, and only that will open your car.

I'm sure the whole push button start thing has been mentioned countelss times but since GM wont do this, how about GM offer us an option to either do their recall solution or offer owners the push button/proximity system as another option but at a fraction of the cost. If it would cost $800 for the system I think it would be fair to pay something like $200-$250 as an upgrade to GM's recall solution. I'd be down for this. Anyone else? GM Customer Service, what are your thoughts about this?

So what exactly is the appeal behind having these "switchblade" keys/fobs, anyway?

Isn't it nothing more than vanity, where people are losing sight of the difference between being able to do something in a high-tech appearing way and whether it should ever be done that way? "New-fashioned" clearly isn't always better.

Personally, I don't even want the fob to be integral with the key. Keep them separate and most cases of locking the keys inside/inside the trunk just go away.
