The base V6 will be at least a little lighter, even assuming a 6-speed manual shows up, because the Cyclone V6 is a much, much lighter engine than the 4.0L COlogne used currently. Most recent weight numbers for the 5.0L say that the entire driveline will add somewhere between 25 and 40lb compared to the current 4.6L driveline the Mustang GT uses. That includes any weight gain added by the expected 6-speed transmission, driveshaft, etc.

We already know additional gear options will be coming (3.73), so that's at least one change. I am not saying that there will definitely be an update, but to say that there won't be as a 100% fact without any proof is silly.
There is almost no doubt that the LS3 will be more or less a carryover piece for 2011. If nothing else we know this from the total lack of rumours regarding a possible 2011 model year upgrade to the same. Minor changes maybe, but nothing major is coming or we would have heard something by now. You simply can't hide major changes anymore. Gears or a handling package I could see, but power to weight still seems to be in the Mustang's favor until GM revises the LS again.

yea from what i am reading the 5.0 is the new base GT engine and they are keeping the 5.4 on the gt500 but with an aluminum blocm instead of iron.

The 4.6 GT is already very fast at 4.9 seconds to sixty mph. I am guessing the new 5.0 will drop at least 3/10 of a second, placing it a nose ahead of the Camaro SS, or certainly at least just as fast as the SS.

This is very intersting, and if my SS order falls flat for any reason, I may just have to wait for the GT.

Still there is no mention of the weight of the newer Mustang. There is weight being added for the drive changes, but no mention of the weight for safety upgrades. Still waiting to see numbers in writing for the power of the 5.0, and the final weight of the car. Also back to the numbers for the handling of the Trackpak Mustang to the Camaro. Have any of the numbers been redone in the same location, at the same time, with the two cars yet? The answer here would be...NO. Until they are the testing done between the two really was pointless. Different locations, with different varibles. Get the two together and do an actual head to head.

Assuming there will be any weight gain for safety even when the new safety stadnards come into effect, how would that have an effect on this car. The safety standards don't come into play until the 2012CY, more than two years from now.

You can stop praying for a miraculous, Oprah-like weight gain now, it isn't going to happen.

Actually they did, and the difference was surely there. Check the GT vs. SS vs. RT article at caranddriver.com

So your saying instead of going ahead and doing the upgrades that are mandated they will just wait till the last possible time to do them? This is a 2011 car so that wouldnt be 2 years from now, that would be a year. Also no I dont think there will be an Oprah balloning, but another 100lbs for safety isnt unreal. My weight guess has been about 3700lbs for the Mustang. With the engine upgrade and saftey equipment added that would put my guess real close. Hmm lets see how does it come into effect. They are mandated for the safety equipment and more weight equals slower car...you do the math. The only one praying here is all the Mustang fans hoping that they get 400hp and the weight isnt added. To get them both would be a miracle.

Yeah that one I did watch and couldnt believe the crap that was spouted. How in the hell did they come up with the IRS comments about the Camaro. What they said is completely opposite of what an IRS is meant to do. That to me was hard to believe. The rest I had no problem with and could understand where they were coming from, but that comment alone makes the article suspect to me. All the multiple reviews on the car and this is the only one that mentions the IRS bouncing around during cornering. Out of all the reviews this one has a problem out of the IRS...

Glad to see Ford's finally ditching the 4.6. It's a great engine, but it's been around since 1996. Time for an upgrade. I just wish they didn't ugly up the design so much (I'll definitely take the interior upgrade though). Even with the 5.0 it will still probably boil down to a driver's race.

Is there a safety requirement that they wouldn't have already met with the 2010? I really don't think the weight will increase a ton, but we probably will see a jump somewhere between 75-100 lbs.

Yeah there are a few they havent met yet. The roll over and side impact has been increased from 1.5x unsprung car weight to 3x, and the addition of side curtain airbags. Me and you Nester agree. I didnt think there was going to be 300 or 400lbs, but with the new drive train and safety I figured between 100-150lbs.
