Chris,
Thanks! I'll let you know. As long as a publication results from it, all the testing will be done using state-of-the-art, university owned equipment with no upfront cost. Depending on the results, GM might end up funding the project. Research ain't cheap either.

I've conferred with some colleagues, and we believe that a failure analysis is the only way to determine the root cause of the failure. To remove myself from the equation, I will not take part in the study. At a minimum, the study will involve fractography, mechanical property evaluation, alloy composition determination, microstructure evaluation, and stress analysis. The resulting paper is going to be submitted to a peer reviewed technical journal (either SAE or Engineering Failure Analysis). It will take some time, but this information deserves to be public domain.
Sorry to hear they denied your warranty! I am excited however to see that you will be able to pool some serious resources to have the failed shaft evaluated! Maybe it will get GM to finally help us out! Keep us informed and thanks for your efforts!

That's wild, no problem here, and I didn't hide the Maggie !

I just took it in and said do what you gotta do...if you can warranty it cool. if not, I knew what I was getting into and no grudges held.

Next day over night FED EX new tranny. They even put a new shifter on for me at no cost for labor since they had the tranny out anyway.( Great dealer)

A friend of mine had his go twice and he got a new one both times. (Same Dealer) They told him no more though....

Next was the CV joints for me....

I am going to have to start chillin' a little or I may be pushing my luck.

By the way... dealer did all the mods for me so that might have helped the situation some.

It will be interesting to hear what really was the cause...there has been all kinds of speculation from no bearings to heattreat problems.

When my dealer gave me mine back he said here you go with upgraded trans.....Don't know if he was BS'ing or even knows for that matter. I asked what waqs upgraded but of course got no real credible answer.

Anyway I have been pounding on her pretty hard ...570 rwhp and soi far so good. half shafts and CV joints seem to be the weak link now.

Hey Mike. I misread my VIN. It is actually 19687... If ya want to update the list (again)..

I'd been thinking that I had one of the first 10,000 cars all this time... I think I remember my dealer telling me that when as we were tracking it through the build process. I had never really paid much attention to it until this whole shaft issue. I've got the entire VIN pretty much memorized by now.. Anywho... My car was built in June 09 and I took delivery in July (2 days before the hold was placed on the M6's at the factory).

I broke mine a couple of weeks back 12K vin number. We replaced it with a RPM level VI transmission. I also just got word that my old transmission will be taken care of under warranty so if anyone needs a GM replacement TR6060 I should have it in a week or so.

Winter time mods maybe, or just the beginning of the spring season.
Sounds like more power, more sun and more parts LOL.

How the heck did you get GM to warranty it with the mods you have?!?

Here's what mine looks like at the moment:

Modding does not void your warranty against manufacturing defect.
This is the LAW! Contrary to what GM and MANY people of this forum would have you believe.
Huge props to GM for doing the right thing!!

Mine looked exactly the same. It is textbook brittle fracture due to improper heat treatment.
