That so sucks sorry for that. They do not understand what it is to have such a sweet ride. That is a move one should never make. No matter what car it is!

I would press charges. If he doesn't have a record already, he probably won't do jail time, but have to do community service and pay for the repairs. This would give him a criminal record, teach him a lesson, maybe make him more responsible (if the community service is good), and get you paid back.

I'd think your insurance rate wouldn't skyrocket from a vandalism claim...I had one when I was 17 and it didn't change and my vehicle came back looking great from the repair. That douche nozzle deserves something on his record for his douche baggery, hope it trails him for a long time.

I had a drunk driver come through my back wall. What happened was he got a reduced sentence with the contigent he make payments. If he stopped, he went to jail.

I'd contact the local DA and see if that is an option. There's video footage, and so the case should be fairly easy. See if the DA will allow you to file charges, he'll plead down to something lesser with a reduced charge that gets bumped up if he's late at all in making payments. Also, he'll have to pay the court, who then pays you. It delays your check but reduces the headaches (e.g. giving him your address, etc) that having someone pay would bring on.

I had a kid hit me my senior year. Promised, his dad promised... Never paid. 15 years later he sends friend request on Facebook. He's luck I moved far away or I'd pay him a visit to let him know firsthand how I still felt.

In situations like these, payment plans are garbage. After a while the perpetrator always starts flaking on their payments because they feel like they've paid enough and they're done. 99% chance ur gonna get screwed on option A.

I say press charges and go after him. Make him appear in court and give an account of how big of a douche-bag he is. Let the judge tell him what he has to do and then let your insurance's pit bulls pound it into his head how worth it is to be a tool.

Principle said the kid didn't even have a reason the car, which really pissed me off. I tried getting the kids name but they wouldn't tell me, I'm guessing it was for the kids safety.

Anyways the rough estimate for the damage was 1500k, if the kid can't pay that, then I can press charges. Police said since the kid was 18 he could go to jail for up to a year for vandalism. I could honestly care less if that kid goes to jail, he deserves it. But I'm leaning more towards the payment agreement just because I want my car fixed asap. If I were to press charges I wouldn't get a cent from him and my insurance would cover the damage. (or at least I think? Haven't really talked to my insurance) I wish I could through him in jail and still have his parents pay for the damage.
Yeah, this is inaccurate. Sounds like the school is trying to keep him out of jail. Press charges, then sue him and his parents in civil court after the conviction, assuming the judge doesn't order restitution as part of his criminal sentencing.

Your school is making it sound like you would not be able to go after him if you pressed charges, which is completely untrue. Civil court and Judicial court are two completely different things. DO NOT GO WITH OPTION A. Press charges on the kid, then file a civil suite as well as a legal suite against him. You can go after damages, throw his ass in jail, and possibly even get more money out of it. Estimates are always a low ball. You should seek $2000+ in damages.

Press charges. He needs to learn a valuable lesson not to mess with other people's property. It sucks for him, but he made the choice to be an idiot. I would do everything I could to put him in jail. Also, it will set an example in your school not to mess with other's property. May have kids thinking twice about walking up to your Camaro...

What would constitute a legitimate reason to key someone's car?

The principal might not give you his name, but if he's 18, the police will. My advice would be to get his name from them, and then turn it over to your insurance company. They'll go after him.

Press charges. Six months of wearing a mophead as a wig for his cell mate, Rocko, might make him think twice about doing something like this again!
