Why did the OP make this thread, just to say in his original post that he wrote off the GT500 and he's gonna be getting a ZL1 anyways? He could have just made a thread and said, "Hey, I'm getting a ZL1", not "I don't know what I want between the two, but I don't want a GT500 and I crossed it off my list, what do you guys think I should get?"

Drama queens, then we get yelled at for posting facts in response.

If it makes ANY difference to you, listen to what Carroll Shelby calls the Mustang 4x in this video.

Edit: He said this recently even though he was talking about the initial perceptions.

I said I "may" buy myself a muscle car, may as in I may or I may not and if I do I "think" I'm going for the ZL1 but there are a few things that bug me about the car and we have been discussing them.

I have crossed the current 550hp GT500 off my list. There's an outside chance I'd still consider the 2013 650HP GT500 though the more I learn about the ZL1 the less likely that seems.

As of today I have also crossed off the next generation Mustang due out in 2014 as I found out the GT500 version of that may not even arrive until 2015 or 2016.

So its down to the 650hp GT500 or the ZL1 and at the moment the ZL1 is way out in front IF I decide to buy one at all.

There hope that clears things up for some people, don't know how I can be any more clear than that.

Well the 2013 650hp GT500 is officially crossed off the list after reading a Road and Track piece (they were invited over to Germany for testing). The improvements they made sound like a hack job on a car never designed to handle 650hp vs a well though out engineered approach.
  • The ultra-stiff suspension is so stiff, "that over a particularly bumpy road outside the track my vision blurred"
  • Engine oil, diff, trans coolers on a 650hp car are optional
  • The engine is over bored to is maximum size, that kind of sucks of you want to rebuild the engine one day.
  • The chassis, introduced in 2005...it was designed to support a 200- bhp V-6 and a 300-bhp V-8.
  • "after the first jump at Quiddelbacher-Höhe I began frantically gesturing for a switch to the sport setting...there is simply too much bounce on the landing, like a Cessna trying to touch down with excessive airspeed.

Coolidge.......... EXCELLENT RECAP. Informative, concise, and brilliant if I may say so myself. It actually has lost a lot of its' refinement! Or anyone else wanting to take a small trip of say 100 miles! And, that point about the "rebuild".... even racers might be left out to dry on the maintenance/rebuild end. Brilliant point.

Good points to consider, but one qualm. To match the power the stock 5.8 will be capable of, the LSA will NEED a rebuild. I can't imagine a scenario where you would need to bore the 5.8 any more as plenty of people are putting down well over 1,000hp on stock bore 5.4s.

that really is not a bad option... A Grand Sport is priced right in line with both those cars and unlike the other two cars you could get a really good deal (I have seen dealers selling GS's for around 10k under sticker!

I would say the z-l1 because it has an amazing sound and looks. However the GT does have navi and all that. However, that means more computer problems later. It's really a personal choice. What you like

you cant go wrong with either car IMO. The ZL1 is fast enough to the point you wont really miss the 90 or so HP and the GT500 is going to handle so good you probably wont miss the magnetic shocks. They both look good (GT500 stands out more IMO) so whiever you pick im sure will be brag-worthy.

Happy 50th, Coolidge! I was there two years ago, when I bought my KR. No regrets. The Camaros hit the road shortly after, and I just had to sit in one to see that I made what was for me, the better choice. The ZL1 is a different animal, and should be a wonderful beast to drive. Good looks, handling and great power. I think you can't go wrong with either car, if you're wanting a muscle car. I've owned both Ford and GM goods over the years, but my first car was a Ford, and for some reason, I'm still more of a Ford fan. I've long known there's always a quicker, faster, better handling (quieter, smoother, more trendy, etc.) car out there, but my GT500 still makes me grin whenever I fire it up. I think it was the right muscle car for my 50th birthday toy.
