Spring pressure is there primarily to make the roller follow the lobe on the down ramp. The profile on the down ramp is there to close the valve as late and as gently as possible. They have no problem following the up ramp all the way to TDC.

I blew an engine from valve float. The valve was slamming into the seat and it popped the head of the valve right off the stem. Punched the valve head through the cylinder head and then filled the cylinder with water, stopping it dead at 6800 rpm. Entire engine gone, all the rods chucked out the block.
Impressive! I bet that wasn't one of your happiest days.

So how does one catch a soft cam before installing it? I'm not in the market currently, but I don't want to have to monitor cam wear like you would have to with these examples. I guess one would just have to listen carefully for new noises up front.

If someone wants the added insurance just send the cam off to be cryo treated.

That is surprisingly cheap insurance. Looks like $75 can buy some peace of mind.

Actually.. from that same site.

"Cryogenic processing is not a fix for bad heat treating. Although it will cause retained austenite to transform to martensite, so will cold treating at -140oF. It will not cure the other ills of bad heat treat."
