Extremely sudden. I had no reason to suggest that anything was wrong.

I guess GM would rather be laughed at @ the tracks , than put up the money to recall & fix all the affected trannys before they break.

Major League FAIL.

Is this really how you're going to handle this GM? You should reconsider.

I agree, GM should recall all those affected or at the very least have them checked and tested to see if affected..

Having your car pushed off the track is extremely embarrassing.

I have pictures of me with my car on the tow truck. My roommate was going to post them on facebook but I asked him not to since I didn't want to get flooded with the onslaught of "American quality" comments. Ugh.

Holy smokes, this is really needs to be addressed. Hopefully something is in the works, because yeah, this is not good for GM for enthusiasts of all types seeing the new Camaro SS breaking like this.

They are obviously covering thier asses from a litigation and PR nightmare standpoint. No doubt someone in legal caught wind of this before any of us could get "The Call" we were waiting for.

Good luck trying to sell one of these cars within the VIN range to a knowledgable enthusiast in the future.

I know its the first thing I would look for....and before anyone asks, yes my car falls right into what we have observed here on Camaro5.com as being the affected range.

Well, if your talking about someone buying the vin range in the future, probably not going to be a problem because it would have been fixed already.

Nothing has been said by GM. The best I can tell is ~12000 through ~25000.

Unless the car is driven slow all the time, I don't see the shaft lasting more than a year, max. Although mine took a little while, it was still within the first few months and 2nd time at the track (7th total run). I had done more hard launches using launch control on empty streets though. I think it took a well prepared track to serve as a catalyst.

thanks,
you'd think with 13k or so cars, it would be addressed.

All it's going to take is someone crossing an intersection, a weakened output shaft breaking from prior hard launches using the factory installed launch control, and them getting slammed by a semi truck before GM will actually do a recall. I'm sure their people have run the odds of something bad happening and decided to risk that rather than spending the money they don't have. Money really shouldn't be an issue because they should be sending the bills to Tremec!!!!!!

With my luck, I can almost guarantee mine will break after I get the s/c on, and GM will give me the middle finger when I come in to get it fixed under warranty even though there is a known problem.

Has anyone written to the NHTSA?

Thier cost benefit analysis probably factored in the lawsuit from something like the above scenario. What they did NOT factor in is that this is the 21st century and things like this are no longer easy to control and sweep under the rug. Social media, blogs, forums, etc would have a story like that spread around the auto world in an instant.

As it stands right now, we have to assume GM knows which transmission batches were effected and what cars they ended up in. GM knows if my car if a failure waiting to happen. What they don't know is where that failure will occur or what the outcome will be. They are betting that it will be without a tragic incident. Lets hope they're right.
