The officer will most likely make you get out of the car to protect himself.

I'd also let him know if its loaded or not.... if its got a lock on it etc. If I've got time before he walks up, I'll unload it and leave it with the slide locked back or the cylinder open..... no need to scare anyone any more than you have to.

In NC, you must present your CCL with your drivers license. When you hand the officer these you MUST inform the officer if you are carrying whether the officer asks or not, you do not have to inform him/her where it is. Failure to inform the officer that you are carrying not only will result in the loss of the CCL, but also a block on any future gun purchases.

I would let him/her know where it is, regardless. If you say, "I have a gun" and reach over for your wallet, you can guarantee the officer will be jumpy. It's better if he or she knows where it is so there's no confusion.

What's the appropriate protocol if you don't have a CHL?

In Texas now, you're not required to have a CHL to have a loaded and concealed firearm in your vehicle as part of the updated state Castle Doctrine.

Correct. Texas has extended the Castle Doctrine to automobiles and trucks. Anyone can carry a loaded weapon and protect their property with it. No CHL necessary. There are some restrictions:

1 it is your vehicle or a vehicle under your control;
2 it must be concealed;
3 you are not committing any crime other than class c traffic;
4 you are legally able to own the handgun; and
5 not a member of a street gang

Exactly. So if, for some reason :emoticon7:, I get pulled over and am carrying concealed in my car (say, the glove box or center console), what is the appropriate course of action to keep from alarming the officer?

Should I inform them immediately that I have a firearm in the car, or should I just go about the stop as I normally would if there were no firearm in the car?

I have a CHL and even though there is no longer a penalty for not showing my CHL when asked, the law technically still requires I show it...so I do. I believe at some point the TX legislature will need to address the discrepancy on discloser between CHL holders and non-CHL holders. That being said, unless the officer wants to search your car...concealed is concealed... and he/she will never know the difference. If he/she does not ask specifically, why say anything at all and potentially put him/her on edge. Although if asked...I would tell him/her.

Although I don't allow him to right now, because he is still in school, he is technically allowed to carry loaded and concealed in his truck.

Funny thing in Texas. An 18 year old can own a 9mm handgun. They cannot get a CHL until 21 and cannot buy ammunition until 21 for a handgun. LOL.
