The Camaro is relying on an advanced suspension, differential (and associated traction software), and brakes and so it gets a carry over engine from the CTS-V. Whereas, the GT500 is relying on it's lifespan (for gradual suspension tweaks) and a more expensive engine to achieve the desired affect.
The GT500 will surely benefit as well from the Boss 302, since its relatively simple to do and implement.
i personally believe the GT500 will gain better cooling and suspension, but not an entirely new engine. some of the videos on the ring if you listen closely show the designative sound of a supercharger.

Unlike the current supercharged 5.4-liter, the new engine will be turbocharged. Though FIN cannot bring you the engine's new displacement, a 5.0 and 5.8 have been rumored. We can tell you that the engine will deliver a Camaro-killing 650 horsepower according to our sources. This upgrade will make the 2013 GT500 the most powerful, factory made Mustang ever."

If this is fact not fiction, we're in for a ride in the chevy vs ford hp war. Hopefully they adequately upgrade the suspension.
I really don't see a new motor and/or turbo for 2013.

All they have to do is replace the blower with the TVS and bam 650hp with no problem.

+1
it look to me Ford is fixing the heat soak problem the GT500 has and implementing, suspension lessons learn on the Boss 302 program.
i even suspect updated TViCT heads on the 5.4L.

If Ford doesn't bother to fix the traction issues on the GT500 any increase in hp is a complete waste of time in anything other than a top end run. It's really almost amusing to see a stock supposed 550 hp, 55k supercar running mid to high 12s because the suspension and tires will not work together.

wrong.

i talked to a 'person' at ford. there will be a twin turbo coyote on the GT500 based car. they have already been trained on the car.

what this means is a 3500-3600lb 600+ HP SVT car.

Not sure about the weight, but even if it doesn't loose any lbs, and can actually get any traction, it is going to be a beast for sure ..

If they can keep the price right around the current price range it will be the best bang for the buck out there. Unfortunately I can see this as a car that will have large dealer markups ..

Guess what I pulled up next to at the gas station yesterday...

To be perfectly honest I wasn't sure it was a Gt500 with the baby blue... but there it was.. that nasty little cobra emblem and S H E L B Y on the back...

The guy was in his Late 50's early 60's I'm guessing, couldn't have been a nicer guy,

I asked him if I could take a picture, the first thing he said was... Man it's so dirty... LOL

So we get to talking about his car, it's a 2012 he said, and apparently rare with the baby blue and no stripes. He's a long time GM guy who just couldn't wait for the ZL1. he'd been watching the camaro's and he had a Corvette he couldn't drive any more due to some joint problems so he got the GT500...

He loves it. I was hoping to surprise him a little when he asked me about mine but the first thing he saw was my teeny tiny THR "supercharged" emblem and said, "look at you!" LMAO, he then asked how much power I'm making, I told him 550 to the wheels, and we had a 10 minute conversation like we were old friends... At some point I told him, "GM doesn't have a GT500 fighter yet so I had to build my own." he laughed and said, "well I'm glad you warned me. I knew you weren't stock when you pulled up..." We agreed our cars were close enough that it didn't really matter... We shook hands and he drove off... Never even thought to ask his name... but damn his car sounded good as he got on it leaving the station...

I know I give you mustang guys a hard time here. I hope you understand that as a mod here we protect the interest of Camaro owners... But I really do enjoy the fact that the muscle car is back and how it bridges so many generations, cultures and backgrounds.

FWIW.

The GT500 is a fast moving target. The ZL1 will have its (very short) moment at the top but it is all good...... won't take much tweaking on it to race right up to the snake's tail again. The new GT500 will be one bad-a$$ mutha.

I would be glad to be wrong. I just figured that the next engine will debut in the new "Cobra".

How is it going to lose up to ~300 pounds over the current GT500? I am not a hater and the GT500 is on my short list, but I don't see it losing that much weight for a car that comes out in January. Maybe the next gen Mustang, but not this girl.

My 2011 weighed in at 3,750lbs bone stock and 3,660lbs with aftermarket wheels and tires so Its not going to be imposable or anything like that to loose that 150lbs to be in assasinator's estimated 3500-3600lb range.

Some guys with my same wheels have shed even more weight and are in the 3,5xx range by going with lighter full O/R exhaust, and removing the 50lb passenger seat on race day. There is also another easy 150-200lbs by going with lighter weight 2 piece brakes and tubular K member.

You DID key his car before he left, right?

Nothing better than a good sport.
