I did the fuse pull and no help. I guess there has not been regular gas put in. I wonder what gas they use at the factory?

I know that this has already been asked numerous times but a number of the responses I've read seem to be more from a speculation standpoint. I drive a 2011 Camaro with and LS3 and know the dealer put 87 octane in the car before I got a chance to drive it. I personally never plan on running anything less than 91 in my car and would like to fix this issue as soon as possible. Is this problem with the ECU reset confirmed to be affecting the newer Camaros?

Unless they have changed something really big in the passed 2 months, then yes. It has been confirmed.

I own a Camaro again!

Thanks everybody for this thread! I just did the fuse pull and I have my Camaro back!

I was putting the cheap stuff in on purpose but I've learned my lesson.

Unfortunately the Dealers haven't! This thread should be required reading for every Dealer's service dept.

Before I found this thread I took my 1SS into the dealer for the performance problem and they said everything checked out fine.... the same day I took my 1SS in there was another SS being dropped off for.... performance problems. Poor guy, I hope that other owner finds this thread too

haha thanks for the props mlee.

I'll talk more about my case on the chance that it might help somebody else with diagnostics.

And a disclaimer: these are just my opinions on my experience so take it with a grain of salt. I don't have access to any special information and remember this is the same idiot (me) that was using 87 octane because he wanted to be cheap

---

I filled w/ 87 octane since buying the car (because i wanted to be cheap and I think the car switched to the safety fuel map right around 1,000 miles. I was driving (city) and the switch was very pronounced. I was stopped at a light, then proceeded through the intersection and half-way down the block at a certain moment the rpm's spiked without additional power to the tires and then that was it, from then on for any given rpm I had less torque/speed (talking mostly about low gear, sub-3,000rpm city driving here).

The switch felt very "software-y." Because it was very wet out I first thought I had gone into some crazy traction control mode and I was hoping the car would eventually snap out of it. It didn't.

One of the conclusions I draw from my experience is that the car is _very hesitant_ to switch to the safety fuel map. When I was fueling with 87 octane, I had very rough idle, with many of those intermittent "shudders" (I just thought: hey its a v8 400hp, must be like this- dumbass

The car put up w/ 100's of miles of 87 octane and then one cold morning it finally gave up and switched. So I would say, don't worry if your buddy puts in a half a tank of 87. (although, i am going to carry a few bottles of emergency octane boot just for this case, haha

The reason I think the car is so hesitant to switch is that the safety fuel map is so effective in reducing knock _and_ power. After my "incident" the idle using 87 octane was very smooth. One of the ways I knew the fuse pull had done something is because I had slightly rougher idle on 91 octane fuel then i did at 87 octane on the safety map. wow.

So, I understand the problem GM is in: the reduction in performance is so significant that they don't want the car to be going to the safety map one day and then the normal map the next. That would drive people crazy, but they also don't want to let the engine get knocked for 500 miles just to prove "yep the guy is still filling up w/ 87 octane." There really is no simple way to program it to get the car back to the normal map once it's gone to the safety map. For this reason GM probably said: "f-it, let's make the car take _a lot_ of abuse before we go to the safety map, it's really a last resort type thing."

Then somebody probably asked "well, how do we get them back to the normal map?"

A: "we've got time, we'll figure that out in the aftermarket ... " ha!

Been following this thread as well. My car doesn't feel sluggish. I've also been driving an 04 Corolla for a few years so almost anything would seem fast. I know for a fact that the dealership put 87 as the first tank. I just pulled #5 and #20. We'll see.
