I weighed getting a new panel against the prospect of having some sweaty, possibly greasy, guy in my backseat for four hours removing all kinds of parts and scratching them as he went . . . and I decided my back panel's mark looked just fine

Ok, now be careful when you roll down your windows...
No i mean the rear panel or rear fascia as the Chev. parts person referred to it when he ordered a new one.

Thanks for the "careful" advice, i will pass it on.

It's weird, my old 14 1LT had that defect, my 15 1LE has that defect, but the enterprise rental car (15 1LT) I used for a week while my car was getting serviced doesn't have it. SMH

I agree, not worth the future headache. On my 2015 I noticed the reflection of the back panel with this defect before I saw this thread. I didn't even bother to investigate it because I assumed I could simply wipe it off. It's pathetic that this problem has been going on this long with no resolution.

I think it is pretty obvious what happened. They got a bad (and sizable) batch and are replacing them out ONLY as customers complain. My guess is that only about 5% of those with bad ones have complained, so this strategy makes good business sense.

GM is a business and will take the most cost effective way out.

+1 for "birthmark" I kept my rear panel, and I wasn't going to part with my new Camaro over the panel when it functioned fine.

Or have the dealer mess something else up while fixing something that doesn't really matter..
