Volkswagen used to offer diesel (unless they still are) in their Jetta and Beetle; the diesels of 30 years ago vs 15 years go and today are different. 15 years ago when small vehicle diesels came back (it seems ) diesel was cheaper than gasoline until about 7 years ago I think? I don't know why anybody wouldn't be ready for diesel sure the fuel costs more, the maintenance costs are higher but you also get better fuel burn and the engine lasts longer.

I don't know that I'd like a diesel Camaro; but I wouldn't mind a foreign muscle car (if such existed) that had diesel then that'd be the way to go.

The diesel may cost more per gallon , but with that gallon one goes way further than gas , so it cost less per mile
Just ask anyone that drives the Sprinters diesel versus sprinters gas engines , you will be shocked
And the torque on those things /acceleration will make you a believer
Engine noise etc while driving it's basically lower than fords/chevy vans

right I forgot the cpm is better; (I did say that the diesels burn fuel better though)

I am already a diesel believer; I used to have a F350 with a 7.3L PSD the torque in that engine will throw you around when you mash the pedal to the floor (which I like to do from time to time, just make sure nobody is in the way :P).

Too much $$. CNG tanks are expensive let alone the stainless lines and regulator. Then you run into fueling. Granted I do see cng filling stations popping up at various truck stops across the country, there is still not enough. The home fueling stations are expensive and slow since they only purge. Unless they've come up with newer technology since I've checked out CNG.

We just bought my wife a 2014 Passat TDI (diesel).

As a family car, we love it. It's got plenty of room in the back seat for my teenage sons, and it gets 40mpg. We have been going between 500 and 600 miles between fill ups in mostly city driving. It has a ton of low end torque. If you stand on it, you'll definitely notice that it's no hot rod. But in normal driving, you spend pretty much all of your time in the torque sweet spot and it's plenty responsive. It's quiet enough that you can't tell it's a diesel from inside the car. You can only hear the difference right as you start it, or if you are standing outside right next to it at idle.

Time will tell about the maintenance cost. We are expecting it to be higher, but it will be offset somewhat by the fact that the first two years of maintenance are covered by Volkswagen.

That said, the Passat is just transportation and it fills that roll nicely. I bought the Camaro because it stirred me. It's the place where I unwind after a day at work. The sound and character of the LS3 are a big part of that. I can't really see a diesel (or electric) moving me in the same way, even if they deliver bigger power and torque.

Think of what those diesel pick up guys are doing with tuning 20-30 percent increase in horse power and torque. HHHHMMMMM>

The way the camaro sounds can't be beat by anything else that I know of unfortunately mine sounds pretty weak stock as it is right now :( but hopefully I can mod that a bit but while I do enjoy a quiet ride at times I eventually will mod it to make it a little louder. My C5 is meant to be a good weather fun car; so I don't think it will see that much highway miles unless I'm going to car club events around the state which of course will add the miles on it.

I did a quick google on Passat; nice looking car, I kinda like the Jetta better; and I just did a quick look on that too some interesting stuff as VW offers the Jetta in a TDI option as well with the same kind of warranty on its 2014 models.

What I noticed about the TDI vs other 4cyls... is the HP is VERY LOW! But, I would think its kept low to achieve the better MPG it can get (40) so I don't know if you'd want a diesel Camaro or you'd get crappy MPG for racing around town :P

That being said supposedly diesel pickup trucks are supposed to get 20-25mpg which is unbelievable; sorry there's no way... not on a big truck like that I am a believer in diesel power not efficiency but I keep getting told otherwise so I'm not the expert and I don't argue with that

Oh I'm not saying the near future lol. The camaro wil be extinct by that time. But I can see in 2020 most haulers (trac trailers) will run on nat. gas. It's only a matter of time afterwards that they'll turn to vehicles since it burns cleaner ect. Not to mention the stations will be in place.
