The vehicle can only remember the index of 1 device at a time (other than iPod, which stores its own index on itself).

So can the system go beyond the 10,000 song maximum if the device has its own indexing?

BTW, Codeman71 thanks for coming on here and answering questions.

I popped in my flash drive and the system started playing right away (awesome!) but all my files were organized alphabetically by song title (not so awesome). Are there other ways it can organize the songs? Having "Sweet Child of Mine" followed by "Sweet Emotion" and "Sweet Home Alabama" could be fun sometimes, but most of the time I'd rather just pick an artist or an album and have it run through their tracks.
Hmm...that doesn't seem quite right. When you first plugged in the drive, it should have started playing the first song it found, which it sounds like it did. It should also have on the screen ...USB Indexing... in the Album field. While it is doing this, you don't really have much capability to browse your content, except possibly the Folder View. What this how you were browsing your content?

Once it has finished indexing, the Album field should change over to the actual name of the album that song is on. That's your clue that it is done indexing. Once this is complete, you should be able to browse by Artist, Album, Genre, Playlist, etc - provided your MP3 have proper ID3 metadata tags. I know other people have been able to browse their USB content this way, so it sounds like either the system wasn't finished indexing, or the files don't have full metadata tags in them.

Let me know what comes up if you get another chance to try it out.

Yes, which is only supported by the iPod unfortunately. So, you could hook up your 160GB iPod classic and you'll be able to see all of your music.

And...you're very welcome!

I was browsing with the little thumb wheel on the steering wheel. I bet it was still indexing. It was my first time sitting in a Camaro so I must admit a lot of other things were competing for my attention. I'll have to give it a second test drive I guess! Thanks Codeman.

Driving home last night I think I figured out what was happening, and what you just said confirmed it. When you first plug in a USB drive, it starts playing everything on your drive. Since you hadn't gone in to browse anything, it was just playing everything in alpha order. You have to press the menu button on the faceplate to browse through your media. If you were using the steering wheel control, it would just be skipping through the playlist, which was all songs in alpha order. Hope that helps

Oh. So after I use the faceplate to browse to an album I want to play and start the music that way, will the steering wheel controls change to let me go to the next song in the same album, or would I need to keep using the faceplate?

Once you make your selection using the faceplate, you can use the steering wheel controls to advance through the songs that album.

I have had my 8 GB flashdrive in the USB port for weeks now. I have 6 playlists, with about 160 songs under each playlist. The one thing I haven't solved yet: When listening to one of the playlists, say songs 1-10, and I turn the car/stereo off. I'll then start car, stereo DOES remember the last song playing- but the problem is that the song is now remembered in song alphabetical order (With every song on the flashdrive), versus continuing on in the playlist. I have to actually go back in the folder's playlist and rotate the dial to get back to song 10 and continue on. This DOESN'T make me want to have alot of songs in my playlist folders.

But no matter how you put music on the flashdrive, you can still search/play by artist, album, etc. Nice feature.

Codeman- Everytime I start the car up, my flashdrive does index for about 10-20 seconds (approx 4GB music on 8GB drive). The first time I put in the flashdrive, it indexed for several minutes.

Yeah the vehicle does remember the last song, but we were unable to store the current playlist.

The quick index is basically doing a quick check on the drive to see if anything has changed. If you add a file, it will have to index the whole drive again.

Very disappointed to hear that it has to reindex every time a song is added. Guess I wil stick to a smaller usb until iphone is supported by someone other then rob me att.....grrrrr reindex every time are you kidding me.

2 hours sounds very long for only 10gb.

No, that doesn't sound right. iPods index very quickly because they don't really need to index. The iPod has everything organized and indexed so the vehicle doesn't have to. It might be that your iPod is not supported. What type of iPod were you using?
