3.73 Gear?
If I install 3.73 gears on my stock 20" wheels is it really 3.73 gear because as what I heard from my friend for example in 2000 camaro LS1 if I have 16" or 17" wheels on the car it's become real 3.73 gears
But if I have 18" or 20" or 22" wheels 3.73 gears become 3.4 something or 3.5 something Is it real? Because if it’s real I will buy 4.10 Sorry for my poor language. |

I'm not really an expert but...
This has more to do with overall diameter of your tires than your wheels. You can still have the same tire height with a 17" rim and a taller tire as you would with the stock rim and tire combination. If you go with a smaller overall diameter, your ratio does change (and vice versa), as it takes less 'time' to make a full rotation of the tire. What your friend says is true in theory, but isn't necessarily dependent on the rim. That being said, I'm inclined to believe the ratios are honed for stock tire height. If I have my stock 20" rims and tires then installing a 3.73 will indeed be a 3.73. I have no proof of this though. |

Do you have a manual or an auto? If it is an auto, go with the 3.73, manual get the 4.10.

If you are going to go thru all the work on replacing ring and pinions, you should take one more step and look at the 2 differential bushings. The OE units allow a rather significant amount of movement of the differential.
Pedders offers a regular performance upgrade diff bushing; 1. EP1167. this bushing is significantly firmer than OE and by design has engineered reliefs to assist in noise reduction. This bushing is good to 450hp at the rear. If you are using drag radials, you should step up to the next version. 2. Our HD differential bushing is significantly stronger and is p.n EP1167HD This bushing has a much higher dura and will have a reduction in the ability to dampen any kind of diff noise. But if you are going after serious performance, have rear hps over 450, or use drag radials, these are the diff bushings to get. There are multiple other bushings that can seriously assist you in putting down the power better. If you need assistance, just ask thanks mike dms |

Going with shorter tires on your drive wheels does kind of work like having lower gears, and vice versa.
Shorter Tire Diameter = Lower Gears Taller Tire Diameter = Higher Gears ...sort of

a 3:73 is a 3:73 no matter what tire size you have. thats 3.73 rotations of the drive shaft to 1 rotation of the tire. NOw tire size does determine your final drive ratio to the ground. However that is determined by tire diameter so it does not matter if its a 17" rim or a 20" rim if the tires are the same height. With that being said a taller tire will mean you need more gear to get the same effect as a shorter tire.

4.10 gears
Quote:
In the days with 3 gears I could see, but with 6 aren't we getting the same final ratios (1st gear X rear end gears) as an old 3 speed with 4.10's anbd then the top speed of something with 3.08's? all spread out over all those gears? If we lower the gears at all or too much won't we just get wheelspin and a 1st gear that is too low??? Just asking.

3.73's are great in the auto, you can really feel it pull through the gears faster, and hwy cruise rpm is only about 250rpm higher

I would check with Andy @ Livernois Motorsports, he gave me some interesting info on the gearing in the trans of the A6 and you really don't want to put the 4:10 in it. They actually don't recommend anything lower than 3:55 in the auto because as someone stated above, 1st gear would be useless.

1st gear still works great with the 3.73's and will work even better at the track with my nitto's bolted up

Has another tested these gears in the auto and manual? What kind of difference does it make in 60ft, 0-60 and 1/4 mile? I'm interested in possibly getting 3.73 or 4.10 for my Manual LS3, but it's my daily driver, so 3.73s appeal to me more to keep MPG from being impacted too much.
What kind of performance difference could I expect going from the stock 3.45 to 3.73? enough to justify the effort and cost?
