Grinding Gears
Has anyone experienced an issue with what sounds like grinding gears on the L99 (automatic) transmission? On my 2SS automatic it seems to make that sound.
Here's a typical scenario: I'm driving at about 40mph, and traffic slows down just a tad, so I let off the gas (no need to brake) and am now going about 35mph. Then, traffic starts to pick up, so I tap the gas peddle just a bit. It is at that point, where I lightly press on the gas, that my car seems to make the grinding noise. It doesn't do it all the time, but often enough that it has me concerned. For example, on my way to work this morning, it did it about 3-4 times during my 30 minute drive. So has anyone heard a grinding noise with their automatic transmission? Or am I hearing something else? I mean, I think I know what a grinding noise sounds like, so I'm not sure what else it could be. Last question: how worried should I be? Is my transmission tearing up to pieces? It seems to do it at least once every time I take the car for a drive. I have about 4000 miles on the car right now and have owned it for about three months. By the way, it does it both in 'D' mode and 'M' mode. |

Take it to the Dealership now. Hopefully you can replicate this issue and they can have it checked out and fixed for you!

If you can replicate it. Take it to the dealership and take them for a drive so they can hear it.

I would agree BigCarrot and nancygrl. Having the dealership take a look at the vehicle sounds like exactly what you should be doing. In a situation like this when a noise arises that concerns you the best idea is to have the vehicle checked. I hope that helps you and if you do go to the dealership please keep us up to date on what the issue was. Thank you.

What they said! Sounds like maybe just a rattling exhaust heat shield or catalytic converter that will resonate at certain rpm, gear and engine load. Hopefully that's all it is. Anyway the dealership should be able to fix it if they can duplicate it. You may want to have them go on a test drive with you. Good luck!

Update:
I scheduled an appointment with the dealership for 2pm tomorrow. On my drive home from work this afternoon I did not hear the grinding noise at all. I am thinking it may be due to it getting warmer (it was cold this morning, around 40degrees, and this afternoon it was 84degrees). So it seems like it is more likely to make the grinding noise at cold temperatures. I'll update you guys tomorrow once I get back from the dealership. Wish me luck! |
