No it isn`t going to get ugly, all I org. wanted to know was what would happen IF I did use regular and what would happen to the engine, now I`m being accused of committing some sort of High Performance sin for even asking, good grief people, you would think I was trying to feed a baby Pepsi and Hershey bars instead of baby food and milk!
IT WAS ONLY A WHAT IF I DID question not a freak`n plan!

To all of you who answered my org. question......THANK YOU!!!

To the rest who want to turn this into a piss fight.....have at it, I`m out here so flame away.

Most GM V8's have been using ESC (Electronic Spark Control) for many years. It uses a piezo-electric microphone to listen for detonation, and when it hears a certain amount (ECM see's this as a voltage from mic) it will back off the advance.

It uses an intricate logarithm you wouldn't beleive.

So, the higher the octane - the more spark advance and horsepower. As long as the engine uses ESC or similar.

We get 93 in Florida, that's all my Camaro will ever see. Ethanol does boost octane ratings, too.

Throw a can 104 octane boost (any auto parts store) in the gas tank and hold on!

Or you can use lower octane (more volatile) - and have less horsepower, and the resulting lower mpg.

Premium pays for itself by increasing fuel mileage on many vehicles. Corvette C6 owners have confirmed this fact.

So yes, if gas price should go through the roof again gas prices in my part of the world is a very big deal.
If you live in the South you pay as much for High Test as I do for Regular, so consider yourselves lucky.

If you`re interested, look up the gas prices in your area and compare it to what others are paying.

Im confused. Earlier you stated that money wasnt the issue. And then you post up average gas prices and then insinuate that's the reason why everyone else doesn't have a problem paying for premium, cuz we're in the south.

First I think you need to really think about whether or not you DO care about gas prices. Obviously the real answer is a big yes, otherwise you wouldnt have posted this thread.

Next, I want to hop in the go back machine and talk about when gas was hitting 6 bucks a gallon in some places. Everyone at my work was FREAKING out! As was most of the country. The funny part was one of our "Miltons" looked at me with his best bewildered look on his face, and asked... "What are you gonna do?????" I said with a smile.... FILL UP!

Honestly, we as individuals cannot affect the gas prices. When the prices go huge, all we can do is try to drive a little less, let the foot of the gas pedal a little more, and just keep on filling up.

Do I hunt for the cheaper gas stations when I have the time? YES! But, when I need to fill up, I really dont care how much it costs because.... that's the decision I made when I bought my SS. I think if you decide to buy an SS, you should make the same decision... 20 cents more a gallon is all it comes down to. If that's worth it to you to forgo about 4 bucks a fill up to know your car has the gas it was made to run the best on, then buy an SS.

If you feel like when the gas prices shoot up, you're gonna get cold sweats and try to save money everywhere you possibly can.... then buy a V6 and put regular in it all day long and twice on sunday.

That being said, it's your car, do what you want to do with it. But if I saw you at a gas station, filling up your SS with regular because you wanted to save a few bucks... I'd crack a few jokes at ya!

Thanks for quoting the page in the manual Autobot! I had this question in my mind for a while and found this thread. Great post!

OP: Yes your car will be fine.

I disagree. On performance vehicles the best gas mileage will be made using the recomended octane. The car produces more power faster, allowing it to upshift and reach your desired speed easier and with less throttle.

Using an octane higher than necessary will have no affect unless you get a custom tune that advances the timing more than the factory programming.

And the compression ratio on the LS3 is 10.7:1

Before you start toying with lower octane gas I would reccommend you read the article on the hompage titled "Underperforming L99 engine Camaros : problem, diagnosis, and cure" Not sure, but a lot of people have had a serious issue with power and 6 second 0-60 times instead of 4.3-4.6. GM has officially announced that the cars are recomputing to operate "safer" with the lower octane which is resulting in a "SLOW CAMARO" I hope this helps but I know the few dollars extra are not going to hold me back from 92 octane. Good luck.

Robert is correct, running a higher octane fuel in a stock engine with a stock tune is a waste of $$$. The computer can not add timing, it can only take it out.

Did we ever determine if the timing issue being expereinced with the L99 engines is also a factor on the LS3? My dealer filled mine up with 89 first tank. Do i need to pull the fuses , or is this a NON-ISSUE with the LS3 . Been filling up on 91 (Calif. octane limit)
