Loose oil filter

I changed the oil in my car 18 months ago. Recently the add oil light came on. I noticed a large oil spot under it. When I put it on my lift, the oil filter was loose, I mean really loose, and oil was draining down the sides. I am unaware of a filter coming loose on it's own. the filter had no exoernal damage or marks. The O-ring looked good.

Does anyone have any idea how this might happen?

I've noticed that when using AC Delco oil filters, they have tended to loosen up over time. It's almost as if the gasket was shrinking. I have since used Mobil1 and K&N filters and have not observed this issue.

What brand of oil filter was it?

Loose oil filter

Mine came loose with using a K&N until I drilled a safety wire hole on one of my bolts so now I safety wire the filter to that bolt so it can't come loose.

18 months?
I'm a firm believer that people are changing their oil way too soon but 18 months might be pushing it. Lol

I'm sorry, but I don't understand what "This^^^^" means.

It seems that AC delco and K&N are problematic.

also this reminded me that my napa gold filter seemed loose when I changed my oil after 5000 miles. I was sure i put it on tighter than what it took to get it off. There was a drop of oil on the bottom of the filter too, wasnt sure how it got there....

I think it's good insurance. I've done 10 oil changes in 7 years on my L99.
I go by time, not mileage. At least once a year on mine since it's used for
mostly local short trips now.

I can't speak for AC Delco, but the K&N comes with the pre drilled holes for safety wire for this reason. So why not use it like it is supposed to be and it won't come loose. I didn't safety wire my first one and yes it came loose but after that I always have safety wired it and now it CAN'T come loose unless the safety wire breaks. And using .032 stainless steel safety wire it should not break. I think they are only problematic when not used correctly. This is the same concept race cars use as well as we do on aircraft.

Yes! Every single AC Delco oil filter will come loose, just like every LS3 oil pump will fail. Oh and don't forget every Comp cam will fail.

There are tens of millions of vehicles running Delco filters with no problem. If your oil filter is loose I would conclude that it was not torqued properly.
