Any L99 guys with VVT cams?
I’ve talked to a couple shops and both are recommending the LS3 swap and are steering me away from a VVT cam. They said the lope is barely noticeable and the gains are weak on a VVT.
I have LT headers, CAI, and a SCT dyno tune which dyno’d at 361. I’m not looking to upgrade my converter, transmission, swap out the heads, lifters, VVT/DOD delete kit, or run 9’s. I’m just looking for a nice sounding cam that’s drivable and I won’t have to sell my kids to get one. So I figured a VVT cam is the way to go. Any L99 guys out there with VVT cams that did not regret their decision? |

I have a TSP VVT cam. My car has a lope. I would tune out the AFM and keep the VVT.

Assuming AFM-delete... Texas Speed swears buy them. There are some LS3's that are converting to VVT. Under-the-curve power is substantially better.
Without trying to diss anyone, from my reading, it seems the tuners who don't do VVT simply haven't learned how to tune it. So, delete the AFM, keep the VVT, and find a tuner who can work with a VVT L99 cam. Or keep the AFM/VVT and get a cam that works with both and you don't have tho pop the heads for the AFM-delete. On the engine dyno I saw VVT cams make more power thru the complete RPM curve compared to the LS3 setup. The VVT cams are far superior to the LS3 because you can tune them. I would remove the AFM lifters. Most tuners just want to sell what they understand. Call TSP and ask them. Do a search for the TSP threads on VVT.

One shop flat out told me that they didn't understand the VVT cams yet and didn't feel comfortable tuning them. I appreciated the honesty! I'm working with a local shop who's working up a quote for me on a VVT cam thru Comp cams. They said they will have to remove my SCT tune and flash it back to stock and start fresh with their EFI tune.

Give the guys at Mast Motor Sports a call. They have done allot of research on this and have 3 different CAM pakages. They can probably even hook you up with a installer in your area and they have the tune for it.
The had a great write up last year in GM Performance Magazine. |

I've been racking my brain on this one lately. Decided on LS3 convert, but if I did keep VVT I had this one selected. Mast is top dog w/ VVT cams.

DOD delete, LS7 lifters and a mast VVT cam here! I made 415 rwhp/405Tq with bolt-ons and a Mast stage 1. Check the video in my SIG if you think VVT's don't have lope

So you gained about 30 rwhp with that stage 1 cam? I assume that the other stages, 2 & 3, will produce more. What may I ask was your determining factor in your decision to go with the stage 1. |
