Clunk sound in the rear
Heys guys I have a big clunk sound coming from the rear end when switching in-between reverse to drive or vice versa. I replaced the axles and it helped a little. I have a 158k on the odometer so I know something is bound to be worn out. On the drive shaft has anyone had these go bad on you at the splines because the joints don't have any play, or would you suggest something like sub frame bushings? Thanks

Did you check the intermediate drive shaft bearing?

OMG. I didn't even know there was one. It must be covered up by all that heat shield. I'll take a look at it, thanks.

Well I checked out the drive shaft and found no play in it. It really seems like the sound is coming from around the wheel area but can't really tell for sure. Any other diagnosing tricks?

Get it up on a 4 post rack so you can be under it when shifting back and forth with the wheels on the ground.

There is a known issue with some of the diffs.. I can't remember exactly what it is but I believe its harmless (but annoying).. sorry thats not much help..
Confirm its coming from the back and not the trans.. check your driveshaft bolts.. |

I think it may be coming from the hubs if that's possible? Has anyone else ever had the hubs go bad on you? I was thinking maybe because of the larger tires and rims because I have 20"X11" with 305/35/20. Also I have 158k miles.

My hubs went out at about 80k but they would have to be worn to the point of being undrivable to get the point of making a "clunking" sound. You might want to confirm the drive shaft nuts are tight.

Yeah your right. I took the tire off and turned the hub back and forth while looking at the axle and there isn't really any play in them at all. I also replaced the axles like 3 months ago so I know that isn't it either. And drive shaft bolts are tight. Now I'm wondering about the subframe bushings. Could they be so bad that it could be rocking back and forth from gear to gear? I'm also thinking about the drive shaft just because I can't move it by hand doesn't really mean much cause under load is a different story. I'm thinking like you said I need to be under it while switching gears and looking at it.

Assuming you have the car stopped and the brakes applied, I would think you are looking for something from the brakes inward, or at a control arm bushing. I don't think a subframe bushing would move much with the car stationary. How about the diff bushings?

Look at the rear sway bar poly mounts, while you are down there give it a good tug and pay attention to the sway bar endlinks, they can both be a noisey bunch when going south.

Well I just got under the car and isolated the sound coming from the drive shaft end where it connects to the transmission or tail shaft of the transmission itself. I don't believe there is anything that would be coming from the drive shaft end since it's only a flange right? So I think it's coming from the transmission. Should I just ignore it or is it the start of something bad?

You likely have a worn bushing/bearing at the tail end (at least). The question is at your mileage, is it worth it to only replace the obvious worn parts or just full rebuild/replace with a low mileage used.
