Wrong Gap Between Converter and Flexplate

I put an aftermarket converter in and I think the space between the converter and flexplate was too big. I understand the general symptom of being bad for or ruining the trans pump but I am wondering if anyone knows if this could cause the converter to not lock up?

My tuner maxed pressure to lock up and it would still slip. Could that be from not using a spacer? Just having the converter an 1/8 to 1/4 inch off?

I am not an expert but I dont think that is what would cause it to not lock up. If you have too big of a gap then when you tighten the bolts it will pull the converter out more than it should which would potentially mean disengaging the converter from the trans, but if that were to happen you would break something and you defenitely wouldnt be able to drive it or anything. To my understanding that would be the only problem of having a bigger gap.
