Tried the Toilet de Mod today, no change in noise. My guess is we have different root causes.

My dealer said they are done as GM doesn't want to swap more parts. They tried and likely will always wonder what the noise is, or just write me off as too picky. Oh we'll, seems like the quest for a quiet front end will continue. Just have to decide if that will be via suspension mods or new car fever in the spring.

BTW: Didn't reduce the clunks at all but did completely fill up the gap when wheels turned stop-to-stop, and then some. So, I'd suggest NOT keeping this modification in place. If this modification is reducing noise then find the root cause. The rubber used in the toilet seal is too firm for this use. Perhaps you could cut it in half across the plane and reduce thickness by half, which is about what I measure it would take. But taking up that space does not seem like a good idea.

I installed Pedders xa coilovers last winter and I installed the toilet mod just to fill the gap! It looks great! I didn't have any noise, just wanted to fill the gap! Nice find OP!

Just noticed this thread. Is this pertaining to that mysterious dull ratting sound I get in the front end, that I've had since I got the car used with 6K on it?

So there is a simple lock nut there, that's it? Looks like something to try. If it doesn't work I can try looking at other stuff.

I'm gonna have to say yea. I traded the car in back in 2013 but I left the stuff in there. We sold the car here at my dealership and I haven't seen it come back so I'd say it was still keeping the rattling at bay.

Unfortunately I have to disagree. I had mine on as long as I owned the car and had no negative effects. It didn't mess with the turned of the car or anything. From what I remember it didn't completely eliminate the noise but it did make it to where you don't notice it unless your looking for it.

Totally cool to disagree and I appreciate it! Purely my opinion based on what I experienced with trying it. The strut top mount would contact the rubber about 90 degrees before full left or right of steering. That last 90 degrees would compress the rubber against the strut tower and I could see movement of the front end that didn't happen w/o "The Toilet Mod" . My assumption was that this is a bad thing. However, in hindsight, you don't turn that far often - perhaps hardly ever - at least I don't. If it reduced this annoying hollow 'lumber sound' then I'm all for it. Agreed it looked a LOT better too.

Oh, and I'd really like to understand more about this noise and why this mod reduces it. Last I remember, it was 3 years ago I think, I removed the sway bar end links and drove around with bar tied up. Noise was GONE. Completely! So, I always assumed it was the movement of the bar over bumps, resonance of the sway bar end link (like a really thick piano wire) or some other resonance in the strut tower. Perhaps the strut tower itself caused a megaphone like resonance from the action of the strut top mount moving. Thing is I can't imagine there's much movement of the strut against the tower vertically (i.e., the strut coming down away from the tower and slapping back up against it. This car is tightly sprung and very heavy.). It could just be the transmission of sound up through the spring and resonating the strut tower, or the spring itself. Been living with it since 2011 LOL
