Surging on a hot day
Hey guys, looking to see if anyone else has experienced something like this before.
I went out on a car cruise yesterday with my friend. He was in his hellcat A8 and I’m in my A10. It was a really hot day and ranged from 90-110 degrees throughout the cruise. When I met up with him, I left the car running to keep cycling oil and coolant so it did not heat soak. I stopped to get gas which was the only time I turned the car off. We proceeded to start our cruise and we got on the freeway spiritedly. After about 2 minutes, he accelerated in front of me and I try to follow. My car starts to surge very aggressively so much to the point where it couldn’t even hit redline. I don’t remember the speed or gear but I will upload the PDR recording when I get a chance. I go to check the engine oil temp and it was almost at 300. I had never experienced this with the car. Last summer was hot as well and never saw this. I monitored the rest of the trip and didn’t surge again but it continued to be extremely underpowered on occasions, so much so that the hellcat would leave me car lengths behind. Both stock. On other occasions, it would have a really good showing. TLDR: spirited driving, heavy engine surging. Engine oil temps really high for about 3-4 minutes. Has anybody experienced serious surging on a hot day? I have the oem dexos fill in and less than 1k miles on the oil change. Could the oil not be adequate for this heat/driving? I know track days get a different oil, perhaps for this reason? |

Well after checking my pdr, it seems as though that it did not save that session, which is really aggravating.
Id appreciate any input on this. Other occurrences, freak accident, remedies etc. I cannot emphasize how aggressive the surging was. It was definitely the computer pulling power. It couldn’t even get to red line in whatever gear it was, which was 3 or 4 |

The odd part is it occurred shortly after you got fuel! I would have to say fuel related.

Similar thing happened to me today. Went to the Cars and Coffee in Palm Beach FL and there was a TON of traffic to get out. I have an M6 and was scooting up little by little as the traffic was moving. Pushed the clutch in and it stalled and I am almost positive I had my foot to the floor while sitting still in first gear. Then after getting out of the traffic I did a little pull on the road with the ac off, came to a stop light and turned the AC back on and the rpm's dropped as if the car was going to die but it caught itself. Very odd. Car did have Shell V Power in it as well. Glad it's under warranty if anything does end up happening!

I would suspect fuel that you just put in it

I would stick with Chevron and Mobil.

I never even thought of it being fuel line vapor lock. I was probably about at 1/8th. I filled with shell V power but a downtown San Diego gas station and I am usually in north county. I never use anything but chevron premium and if that’s not around, shell V power.

Well I got PDR recording proof this morning on 2 separate occasions. While it’s bumming me out it happened again, this time on a 74 degree morning with 220-240 engine oil temps, I’m at least glad I have something to show when going to the dealer.
It happened at 2 different speeds, one at 120ish and one approaching 150ish. I will share the video with anyone who wants to see it, but I’m not sure how this forum feels about me approaching higher speeds on roads in Mexico... |

Just got a call back from the dealership. They found a misfire in the logs at 106mph. they are saying there is a service bulletin for high speed track use that claims there is air in the charge air cooler and it causes misfires. I don't quite buy it, but I guess all I can do is get the car back and see if the problem persists.

When you track it put the recommended oil in - sounds like heat soak.
Get a device to monitor your ECU via the ODB port and look at your IAT2 temps. You could also try using Torco Accelerator - to get your octane up. From the Track prep guide. https://my.chevrolet.com/content/dam...tion-guide.pdf (OW-40 or 5W-40 that meets the dexos2TM specification. If this oil is not available, you can use Valvoline® SynPowerTM MST 5W-40 or Mobil 1® 15-W-50 engine oil)
