To sell or not to sell..
Just got orders to Korea for a year and my follow on assignment to Germany. I can not take my car to Korea, and we are only allowed to ship one vehicle to Germany (4 years). The one vehicle will be our Flex for my family. I am paying on my Camaro and owe just under $30,000 but I have 0% financing. The car just passed 10,000 miles yesterday.
So do hold on to the Camaro or do I sell it before I leave? What are the potential pitfalls of storing a Camaro for 5 years? Thanks!

Sell it your downside is you will not get $30k for it you might get $23k-$24k.
Good luck overseas

Tough decision. Holding onto the car for that long will reduce it's value (based on age rather than miles) and could potentially expose it to all the things that dormant vehicles might endure. Think dead battery, possible corrosion, etc.
On the other hand, it seems like your car is new enough that you probably haven't recouped the cost of financing it brand new compared to the initial depreciation. I would see what it's worth; if the value of the car can wipe out the remainder of your loan than I can't imagine why you wouldn't sell it and buy again when you have the opportunity. If you have to take a loss then you'll be facing the hard decision. |

A 2012 SS/RS should sell for more than $23-24k in the private market. The 3 year dealer residual value for Camaros is generally in the 65% range on a lease, so that's what you might expect for a good price.

One thing's for sure... I would not make payments on a car that I couldn't drive for 5 years. Otherwise, it's up to you - would the Camaro fit your "family needs" in Korea and Germany?
On a side note... you're going to Korea for a year and then directly to Germany for 4 years? Don't know your specific military status (I assume Air Force enlisted), but it sounds like you're getting screwed.

He'll get close to thirty. A friend just traded in a 12 2ss with 7k miles for a truck and she got 29k for it in trade in. For a 1ss if he sold it outright he should get close. Maybe 27k minimum and just take a small-ish $2k+ hit or so

One thing I have learned about selling cars I own is that anyone might be 100% correct that a car you're selling privately is "worth" X amount of dollars. Perfectly accurate to say and know it's worth that much.
The problem is how much can you get a buyer to buy it for. I've bought used cars for less than they are worth. Seller didn't want it to go down that way. You need a 'motivated buyer' to agree with your 100% accurate and correct determination of value. Sometimes it happens.

Consider in what your cost will be for storing it AND keeping it on insurance (because as long as it's financed, you have to keep full insurance on the beast).

i'd part it out, and then sell it as close as stock as you can, and then just eat the loss, if there is any.

when I went to a dealer I got them to quote me 19k on my 2012 1LS m6 with 12k miles. is it possible to entrust a reliable friend to sell it while you are gone? family members? that way you don't have to deal with all the tire kickers and joy riders. then offer the person selling it the ability to drive it until it sells as incentive?

I don't see a problem with storing 5 years it if you put it in a professional car storage facility. That is, climate controlled, gas tank drained, cylinders oil fogged, and battery tender connected. Write off the tires. You will need to replace them when you get back.
But that's gonna cost around $3,000 per year. So selling sounds good unless you have a totally trustworthy buddy to leave the car with who will pamper it in exchange for the occasional joy ride. |

I so wish you were right. I still see 2011 1 ss rs for 30k I am in GA and this is a quick search on auto trader, both private and dealer for my area gave me this. http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-s...CAM%7CSS&Log=0 If they were actually around 25k I would be in a lightly driven 1SS RS 2 months ago |
