As far as corporate lifestyle, a lot of corporate gigs are on call all the time, but I don't know of any that push pilots like that anymore. With Safety Management Systems, operators are pretty much adhering to Part 135/121 flight and duty time limits.

I'm sure there are some crappy corporate jobs out there, but my last two have been pretty good. In my current job we work less than 5 days/month with very few overnights (I have been Hilton Diamond status for years and am Silver now). We have three pilots and average around 100 hrs/yr/pilot. A lot of those hours come in big chunks on international trips.

When we do get out on a long trip, we generally airline home, or we can bring our family along to join us.

Dream jobs are rare, but they do exist!

BTW, I wasn't, by any stretch of the imagination, trying to advocate for the airlines. I was trying to advocate for learning as much as he can about all facets of the job before making the decision.

I fly for an ultra high net worth family. There are three pilots, one director of maintenance and one jet.

In the past I have flown for a crappy charter outfit, flew Boeing jets at an airline (furloughed), NetJets (furloughed), a reputable management/charter company, and finally, my current Part 91 job.

I agree that anyone wanting a career in aviation should learn as much as possible. Most jobs out there have good and bad parts that have to be balanced against the quality of life, pay and equipment that one wants to achieve. One size certainly does not fit all!

I met a retired Air Force Major today . The wife and I had some business in Seattle today , our four year old grand kid was with us . While in town the Navy Blue Angels did a flyby . It's Seafair weekend in Seattle, Hydroplane races , Navy Blue Angels perform there this weekend , Navy fleet is in town and NHRA drags next weekend .

After our business we went up to the Space Needle and watched the Navy Ships pull into town , then headed down to the museum of flight to check out the Blue Angels at Boeing Feild . While at the parking lot watching a Blue Angel take off and land we met retired Air Force Major Brian Shul . Maj. Shul flew 212 combat missions in Vietnam . He was shot down near the end of the war . He was burned so bad they gave him little chance to survive . He fought back , made it and survived his injuries . When I met him today it looked like he was severely scared on. 100% of his body and face .

I'm guessing he could have called it quits and retired then on a disability . Instead he recovered and got back into a cockpit of one of the most fascinating air crafts of all time . The SR 71 Blackbird . This weekend he will be doing a presentation at the Boeing Museum of flight Fri. , Sat . , and Sun. ,at 2:00 pm about what it's like to fly the SR71 Blackbird at. 80,000 feet at over 2000 mph with just a camera in the plane over hostile territory . I cannot wait to hear his strory and read his book ( s) .
