I think it's possible to do a cam swap on the LS without pulling the heads. If you remove the rockers and rotate the cam, the lifters will push up in their holders and stay (maybe). If they slip out they fall in the pan and have a serious problems. I think I remember some threads from years ago that said there was some way of putting a dowel into the head to hold the lifters up, but I don't remember the details.

Neat, that would be cool if you could do that, without dropping one.

Yes you can do it this way and it works. Lifter swap will require the heads to be removed though

This is why I'm asking you guys, yes I know it's possible to change the cam and not the lifters. Will they hold up to my more aggressive cam is the question? I think the lifter will be fine but my real question is will the roller hold up well with the hardened camshaft that GPI offers? I have seen many failures with stock parts where the issue is the roller and cam lobe.

Best advice I can say, while you're halfway there just go ahead and replace them so you DON'T have an issue and have to go back in and do it all over again. My thing is, if you are doing the cam, do the lifters for good insurance. Heck back in the day in my 327 SB, when we did a cam swap we always installed new lifters just because, even in my 72 Challenger 340 SB. If you really want a better answer, call GPI or message acammer who is a GPI contact and ask him/them, since you are thinking about their cam.

Especially if you work on cars at a dealership for a living, it's not much more $$$ for the insurance you get and just your labor that could save you from catastrophic end results some day

I put a TSP cam in mine about 2 years ago and have about 10,000 miles on it now. I absolutely love it. The idle is aggressive and power numbers were excellent. My neighbor tuned it on his hub dyno. James at Build Tune Race did the dyno and put the video on his Youtube channel.

So i watched the video and he is showing your car with just cam ,headers and intake at 490 torque? I dont think i ever seen a car with only these mods basically 500 squared!!That must be one hell of a cam.

Yea I thought the same thing! I have an LOD X-1 intake manifold on mine and didn't get numbers like that. See my sig for numbers and cam specs. Must be a "hub dyno" thing versus a drum dyno. Spinning without the "extra" 60 lbs or so on each axle like a drum dyno does.

Thats what i was thinking, But then why use it if numbers arent accurate,Also he is in colorado with high elevation? I looked at alot of dynos and didnt find one that had those torque numbers with cam only. Mine is 480hp , 440tq which i think is more of the norm for said mods.
