So the moral of this story is don't do donuts in your new muscle car? Or don't turn the steering wheel while you're doing it? I don't see how he did anything the car is not designed to do? How do I overload my power steering pump?

If you are driving straight the pump has little or no pressure- so 5000 rpm is no big deal - if you turn the wheel to the lock position at idle you can hear the load on the engine now imagine that load when the pump is turning not at 600 but rather 6000.
So Do a donut don't lock the wheel. Though the design flaw in the dodge would still cause the pump hose to blow because of the extra pressure.

Your pump took a dump. There is a bulletin on it.
Apparently not the best designed pump in the world. They must have not anticipated high RPM while turning. You'd think something safety related like steering would be a bit more robustly designed, but apparently not. I had a friend the same thing happened to. He did one donut in a snow covered parking lot and the power steering was toast. |

I dont think it is ever a good idea to hold the steering wheel all the way left or right against the steering lock...

From way pat experience in my '69 Z28. Always start the donut from the straight position and turn into it. That way you know exactly where you need the wheels and in complete control of the stunt. Just my two cents worth! ~Tim

Design flaw or not full lock under that much pressure can't be a good idea. Well it never really is unless somehow necessary but especially in that case. I hope you at least got one of the chicks out of it.
