for real racers-road racers
Just a little rib poken at the drag racers. Been there done that (1320) many of times. Just not enough excitement for me.
So on to the real topic of this thread. Who's going to do HPDE's with their car? Better yet, who's going to run in nasa american iron series? |

I would love to auto-x the camaro, but I think the car will get boned in it's class due to it's engine, and the fact its a coupe. Will probably compete with cars half it's weight.
I've never road raced, though I wanted to many time in the Supra. I have much repect for it, it is just not as readily available as the 1320 is for most people.

There's a nice road course just west of Tulsa that I expect to be going to every so often. Drag racing just isn't my thing either.

and just one comment about "real" racers. its not the easiest thing to keep a 3000lb hunk of steel going in a straight line at 150+mph....

Lets see , Drag racer. From a dead stop when he gets a green light he accellerates as fast as he can for 1/4 mile then either jams on the brakes or pulls a parashoot to slow down along with his brakes.. while 1 other car in another lane does the same thing to see who gets to the end first.. Road racer. Starts out with a bunch of other cars, and gets the green flag, he drives as fast as he can down to the first turn and jams on his brakes, not too much and not too little but just enought to make the corner, while trying to avoid all the other cars around him and passing as many as he can. then he accellerates again to the next corner. sometimes reaching speeds of over 150MPH.. and he does that for many laps around a circuit making right and left handed turns until 1 out of many finally wins the race... it takes talent for both but I think it takes much more talent and skill to be a road racer.

I'd like to try a bit of everything in the Camaro. Sadly, all these facilities are becoming rarer and rarer in California. I'd like to go to some high performance driving schools. I'll probably mostly enjoy my Camaro on spirited canyon road runs.

I would not road race my Camaro SS. I would love to run it around a track for fun (not racing other cars). But I wouldn't want to risk a real road race around a track.
Drag racing at the track is very safe and the chance of damage to yourself or your car is very low (at stock or near stock HP levels). Road racing around a track (very fun and takes a lot of skill) is definately a high risk sport. The chance of doing some sort of damage (big or small) to yourself or your car is very high. I wouldn't want to take that chance with my daily driven Camaro SS. |

I'll do HPDE's and autocross if I get one, but I've got a c4 racing vette project that will get sidelined if I start spending big money on the Camaro. BTW, sat in the Camaro at the Cleveland autoshow a couple weeks ago. HPDE will probably work out ok, but hitting the apex cone at autocross isn't something that's going to happen without a lot of practice and seat time. I can't see the front fenders and the beltline is super high....and I'm 6' 3"! I made the mistake of stepping into a z06 right after getting out of the Camaro. I may have confirmed to myself I'm a Vette guy, but I'll testdrive before I solidify my decision. oh well, good for GM either way.
