Weird occurence for the 2nd time
This has happened twice in the last 6 months. The starter was heat soaked and started really hard, then the tach wouldn't work at all, it stayed at zero, and all the lights on the dash (stabilitrak and the others) came on, and the car had an abnormal lope. Not the usual chop but different, like a bit more natural sounding lopey cam idle. Anyone ever have this happen? Just wondering what the reason could be.

Battery probably getting ready to take a shit. On GM cars a lot of time if there is a voltage issue the dash will flip out.

Before guessing/getting a new battery get a cheap $15 battery analyzer and do a load test. That’ll tell you how many volts your battery is producing. Do once before first start of day then again after car is really heated.

Thanks guys. I just replaced the battery 2 years ago, too. Then last year both the alternator and the starter. Went with OEM for those.

I have had batteries die on me only after a couple years. Especially if you have a walmart or o'reilly battery.

When my battery went bad it did all that funky crap too. Replaced it with OEM, and that one only lasted about 1.5 years and took a dump too, it was bad from the get go, got it replaced under warranty and been good so far. It's not the first time I have had a battery just decide to quit. Good luck.

If this one is bad I am going to say screw it and just get a Braille lightweight battery like I wanted in the first place. I'll get it figured out and post the fix when I can. Again, thanks everyone

Well if it ends up being a battery, the Optima's usually last a really long time. Also check the grounds, I think BoWhite had a ground issue that caused cranking problems, he cleaned up some contacts in the trunk with the battery cable on the chassis I think and it fixed it. Might ask him about it.

I have had this exact same thing on my old battery. It was before I cammed it and remember I let it run for a minute or so since it sounded kinda cool. I didn't replace my battery right away, but I know it had happened a few times. Usually turning it off and back on again cleared it and the tach and idle would go back to normal.

it drops the sensor for the crankshaft position. probably not the best for the engine...it'll run, but timing etc is off.
