Service manuals are like anything else, they aren't perfect. It's not that unusual to find differences. And I think some of the online stuff may be worse since they may not catch all of the updates as new editions come out for different model years. Doesn't really help you know which one to us though. At some point you have develop a feel for what is tight enough. Depending on the size of the nut I would probably shoot for somewhere in the middle unless that seems to easy to reach when tightening.

I replaced the seal and all is good now. Just an FYI, you don't need to drain the transmission fluid before doing this. I lost maybe a few drops of fluid.
