Need amp/sub install help

Ok, my wife decided she wanted add a little kick to the BA system, so I had a little project this last weekend.

I had a Alpine V series amp and P2 12" sub sitting around that I pulled out of my old car, so I decided to recycle. :-)

Now I'm certainly not a car audio expert, but I've installed a few systems before so I'm not a total idiot. I picked up a 4 channel Scosche line output converter at the local wally world. Why 4 channel? Cuz that's all they had. I figured I could just use one side and maybe that is my whole problem....

Anyway, installed and wired the amp, tapped the pre-amp signal for the rear speakers and then tested it out. It sounds like crap! Very muddy and the level is way too low. I know how the combo sounds since I had it in my old car, so I know something is wrong.

So I cranked the converter output all the way up, and the sub level as well and it sounds "OK" but the level is too low and not particularly clear. It should hit much harder. I would normally have to cut the amp level way down to keep the bass at a listenable level.

I'm 99% sure it's in phase, as I switched up the +/- and it sounded even worse.

So I'm thinking maybe the 4 channel converter doesn't like to run only too channels? Or maybe I need to tap the post-amp signal? Ideas?

eliminate the converter and see how it sounds. If you are feeding off of the low level inputs from the head unit, converting them again with the schoshe unit should not be needed..

pick up the signal before the amp....its located in the rear driver side in the trunk behind the plastic and side rug. there is a sticky on the top showing which plug it it and which are the signals

also try this thread it shows the location and the wires

Interesting. I never thought of that, but it makes sense. If it's a pre-amp low level signal, there shouldn't be any need for the converter. I'm gonna try it tomorrow and will report back. Thanks!

No, it won't void your warranty.

well I can see how it could void certain aspects of the stereo, such as factory amp or speakers if you tap into those.

Sure, all GM accessories are covered by the remainder of your GM factory warranty if installed by a GM dealer. The GM subs (by MTX) are a GM Accessory. For real...

Ok, finally got a chance to rewire today. I eliminated the line converter as recommended and just stripped my patch cable and tapped the rears before the amp. Oh man, what a difference. Sounds great now. Makes sense now that I think about it, as the signal before the amp is already line level, there is no need to covert it.

I wasn't real impressed with the BA system before, but just the simple addition of a single 12 really does wonders.

This is an after thought now that your issue is settled, but I have always found the Scosche line converters to be absolute junk. I have two in my tool box that I used for 10 minutes. Garbage. Don't even know why I've kept them except it felt too much like throwing away money if discarded new.
