I say go for it. We use to run with the entire front clip off to test a new motor or set up on the hot rods in the old days. My only worry would be if it's going to fit properly and that you will have everything you need to install it.

Rent a truck from home depot or some where
carry the new hood home in the bed.

Problem with that is I wouldn't get my hood back

Thanks everyone for the help. The hood is a zl1 hood so hopefully it mouts directly and I was planning on just bringing my whole tool set and whatever mounting hardware is on my current hood just in case his doesn't have it already. I installed a hood before on my buddy's Camaro so it shouldn't be too hard the second time

Common sense has left the building.... You are not going to damage your camaro driving with out a hood. Pull the old one off at home and drive down and get the other one. Don't forget to bring your video camera. There will be a lot of idiots on the way asking where is your hood. Should make for a nice you tube moment.

He could say, I was sitting in my bathroom looking out the window and saw a UFO come down and hover over my Camaro...next think I knew both the UFO and my hood were gone.....

Sorry I just kind of stole the idea from this..

Dont know what the new hood has on it but I would make sure the latching hardware is in place if you do install it at destination.

Goto home depot and rent a truck. They are cheap as crap (about $20 per hour) and you just return them with the same amount of gas you left with.

Actually, I posted up a DIY on how to easily and safely remove and replace a hood by yourself without damaging the fenders or windshield!

http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=288380

I would have no issues with driving the car without the hood ... as others mentioned, remove the engine cover and verify that the fuse box cover is securely closed and zip-tie the wiper washer hose in place... and then drive slower than you normally would (and if passed by semi's, shift lane position away from them to lessen the wind buffeting).

Recommended tools to take:

1) small flat head screwdriver to loosen the clip on the support prop

2) Ratchet (palm ratchet is easiest to use in the tight spaces) with appropriate sized shallow socket (stock hood is 13mm). - I would take the full set in case the hardware is different (metric vs English)

Optional tools if using my method for removing hood solo:

3) Twin air mattress

4) Air pump

5) Pad (optional - to keep air mattress clean)

Other tools that I would take (as just in case):

6) Adjustable wrench (some hood latch adjustment may be needed to get the hood to close and latch)

7) Medium/large screwdriver (in case you need to loosen the front fascia to remove the cover plate for the latch area)

8) Torx 30 socket or Torx 30 screwdriver (if needed for removal of plate)

9) 10MM socket for bolts at plate edge - not sure what size bolt the hood latch was, but think it was 13MM

10) Flashlight

11) Tape (electrical or duct tape) - in case needed to temporarily secure fuse cover if it attempts to take flight during the trip!

Yes just the cowl lines don't line up with the lines on the front Fascia because the ZL1 cowl is wider.
